On this First Monday of March, we march into the next Monster Madness in our list of Obscure Tokusatsu shows, with the Spectreman tv series, which ran from January 2, 1971 to March 25, 1972. Created by producer Souji Ushio along with Daiji Kazumine and Tomio Sagisu, the Show was produced by P-Productions for Fuji TV.
So, we start this list with the first Kaiju of the series, Hedoron, the first to face the series title hero Spectremen, in Ep.1 (The Uncommon Enemy) and Ep.2 (Hedoron Lives!).
It resemble a Sea Slug, with dark green coloring & yellow eyes ( this is referred to as True Colors Form in its first outing, where as in its second episode, its darker with Red Eyes, referred to as Black Form), sporting six tentacles over it head, covered by moss.
Created with Pollutants by the Fugitive Alien Scientist and series Antagonist, Dr. Gori, transforming a normal Sea Slug into a Sludge Monster that emerged from the sea and attack Japan, corroding everything and causing casualties in its wake. In its first bout with the heroic Alien Humanoid Cyborg, it is defeated when Spectreman just spin around the Monster's head, making it fall over in a dizzy stupor, forcing its creator to retrieve it.
Later, Gori replenishes the Monster and send it out once more to force Spectreman out, now in a more darker color than before; Spectreman faces Hedoron and this time, he finishes it off by using Spectre-Flash while diving into the Slug Monster, fully destroying it.
Hedoron cries used various roars from other Kaiju, not just those from the series itself, but from Toho's Gamines and Gorosaurus as well. It is often confuse to be the inspiration for Toho's Hedorah, another Sludge Monster created by Pollutants, as both almost shared the same name, had a same theme of protecting the environment for the heroes and debuted in their respective properties the same year months apart, though this has never be confirm and was likely coincidence and a Puppet was used to play the monster, rather than the Suit-mation standard of the time.
It's only attacks were a Corrosive mist fired from either its mouth or the tentacles.

Having just seen this, I was wondering from the middle of the description, if it was either some sort of inspiration from / of Hedorah OR was the other way around..
But I think ( upon reflection ) that this series came out well before that particular Godzilla movie.. yes?
and if so, then I'd likely bet that one did indeed inspire the other.. and I admit I very VERY much loved Hedorah.. it was a GREAT monster concept!

A lot of Toku fans consider Spectreman to be just another Ultraman knock-off. And while the series IS inspired by Ultraman, I feel it was able to become its own series with its own merits: I loved the hell out of the soundtrack, especially the banger original opening, the monster designs were pretty creative, even if they were not pulled off successfully sometimes (Return of Ultraman ran into the same problems, and it was released roughly around the same time), and two-episode storylines allowed for the writing of the series to be fleshed out more.
Really, the only complaints that I would have are:
1. The Kaiju costumes/outfits not looking very good sometimes
2. The special effects looking somewhat cheap
Other than that, it's a personal favorite series of mine. I based my character in City of Heroes off of him

Surprisingly, those have been my least complaints; mostly because I expect it to be the norm and I don't see other channels to give the smaller productions the Tsubaraya levels of Budget that went to the design. I mean be wrong, but this is was when the Japanese economy was trickling at the time and many studios had to put tight belts on the Budgets.
My complain is the abrupt and/or lack their off of proper flow sequences, with no meaning or cohesion to it. Example: I just re-watch the Dust Man episodes (11 & 12); during their first battle of the, after piercing through Dust Man, the Monster falls into the Water, and all the sudden a Ship near by explodes. A bit later after this, Dust Man tells Spectreman his story and begs him to kill him, which of course he doesn't cause he wants to help him. Seeing no way out, Dust Man sees the ship that just exploded and decides jumps into the Water, presumbly to die in the fire - NOPE, he is by drowining he offs himself the first time. A bit later Joji/George comes with the monster's servered arm in normal size.
Okay.
1) Didn't he fell in the water before, so why didn't he died by dipping into it the first time?
2) When and where did Joji found the Arm, and why was it in normal size?
Then there is the ending; the way Dust Man dies (again) by stabbing a Crane Claw into himself, then explodes to be reform back as to his human self.
3)Now, didn't Spectreman plow through his body in his spin drill attack before, and did NOT have any form of effect on the Monster, why would the Claw be any different?
4) Why stabbing himself with the Claw make him Human again, but Spectreman Drill Attack did not serve the same purpose? And mind you, Spectreman has used his powers to cure people before.
The even Funnier thing of all is, the Dust Man Two parter are among the ones I consider the Good Episodes of the show.
