Meet one of the greatest mysteries on the island of Viridis-the jewelry mouse. Everybody on the island recognizes her. Wherever there's an open market, from the great season fairs held in Oseille, to the modest, impromptu bazaars put together by various wandering merchants, the jewelry mouse will be in attendance to sell her bracelets and bangles. For all that, nobody knows who she is or where she goes when the markets close. She's clearly homeless. Her clothes, though always clean, are often tattered and worn. Only the necklaces and earrings she sells never seem to suffer from her outdoor existence. Her wares are usually quite cheap. Her bracelets are copper, her necklaces only silver but there are rumors that, if a customer treats her kindly, and wins her trust, she might take them to a secret place where she holds a stash of gold earrings and diamond rings.
Those who mistrust her claim she must be a fey creature, or even a beguiling demon in disguise. Nobody ever sees her eat or sleep, and there are those who claim she can show up at any age, or in any form, she likes. Nobody even knows her name. When asked about any of these things, the jewelry mouse only smiles and slips away to another corner of the fair where she continues her usual dance to display her wares.
Some of you may remember the mouse child who Ciara and Niamh met in the early chapters of Oseille. This is her. She was just too much fun to leave alone.

Oh, I've been looking forward to this one for quite a while now! Like so many of my characters, she started out as pretty ordinary. She was originally just this mouse child selling her cheap jewelry in hopes of making enough to buy her next meal. But I kept playing with the idea of adding a bit of mystery to her, and maybe making her some sort of magical being that I couldn't resist cooking up the story you read above. I've always been rather fond of mysterious people like that, especially those who are ultimately fairly harmless. It'll be lots of fun to work the rest of her story out, and I'm glad you like her!
