Not a compactor, more of a blender for food scraps that's in the sink drain. Why Americans thought this was more convenient than throwing that stuff in the bin is beyond me as well...

Why do they have to be right next to each other to begin with, that's my question. They should put the disposal switch next to the basin with the disposal and the light switch on the other side.

That's how this one was built. I have seen better ones but in some apartment cases this seems to be the way they are.
