I might be stepping on the author's toes but... I think she's staying true to life here. Whether it's canines, cats, or humans... hierarchy or matriarchy... there's a "line of ascension to the 'throne'. And not everyone in that line is either qualified and/or prepared. But it is their right and so those in line around them will step in and "groom" when and where needed. Sometimes violently... sometimes motherly. And rivalry is ALWAYS present so those above must beware of those below. It's funny how it all seems to work out through time. In truth, Ginger is likely more qualified to rule... but lacks certain things in critical areas and, also, does not have the backing of her higher-ups. However, she IS pretty dedicated to the "pride/troupe" so she 'falls in line' even if it's not where she thinks she should be.
