From even before she hatched, Meridia knew where she belonged. The Depths is a mysterious, hungering abyss that corrupts and taints everything it touches, and yet to her it was familiar. In distant lands far from its grasp, she was still plagued by nightmares and whispers calling her back, and it left her wondering why she carried this burden. Many believed her to be a dragon cursed by it, scorned by the world itself in a way. Eventually, though, she learned to accept this part of herself and even embrace it in ways!
Meridia is a shapeshifter from one of my mates' ttrpg campaigns, Call of the Depths. She actually had learned that she wasn't a dragon at all, her species more determined by being half-shapeshifter on the side of her absent father. The campaign has taken the players close to the Depths, where she still grapples with resisting its pull and trying to find who she is outside of its influence. She's also learned that being a shapeshifter does, in fact, make her a monster that hails from the Depths, and she can consume someone's form and even their identity. Spooky stuff.
