After getting to see Godzilla: Minus One in theaters, I got very emotional thinking about how much this character, this franchise, and these stories have meant to me across different parts of my life. Godzilla will always have a special place in my heart, but I think the suit used in 1973 for the Godzilla Vs. Megalon movie and the special Zone Fighter episode has had the longest lasting impact on my love of the character. I tried to incorporate little details from every Godzilla design I love into this piece. It ended up not being entirely accurate to the 73 design, but I feel that it definitely evokes the same kind of feeling that particular design did in me as a child. This character has been a huge source of comfort and happiness for me well into my adulthood, and sometimes it really feels like no matter how bad life gets, Godzilla will always be there as something I can rely on. Sort of ironic that a character meant to embody death and destruction in its early years has come to be a symbol of justice and love for so many of us. Godzilla is nothing if not warmth and safety to me now.
I often think about how long after I’m dead, people will still care about Godzilla and will still want to see all his adventures, old and new. These characters that are so timeless and beloved worldwide, I really hope the legacy of the original films continues to push forward through all the appreciation dedicated fans have shown this franchise since its debut in 1954. One day soon, we’ll all be celebrating 100 years of Godzilla. I really hope I live a long life so I can see how many more films are to come.
Long live Godzilla!
