SPEAKING of characters that needed new refs for a longass time, here's Kanpe! Just to note, while Kanpe themself is considered to be genderfluid and uses he, she or they pronouns, I will only be using they/them pronouns in their bio to avoid confusion while reading. Thank you for understanding.
Tabletop-Adjacent Stats:
STR - 6
DEX - 18
CON - 6
INT - 12
WIS - 14
CHA - 14
(Stat budget for these is 70, with an ability score of 10 treated as average.)
Moveset and Abilities:
Pokemon Species: Smeargle (?)
Pokemon Ability:
- Own Tempo (Kanpe is immune to effects that would make them confused or disoriented.)
Moves:
- Attract (Kanpe makes some sort of flirtacious maneuver toward a compatible creature they can see. To be compatible, the creature must be an adult who could theoretically be attracted to Kanpe, and not have an ability that makes them immune to infatuation abilities. If they are compatible, they are infatuated by Kanpe (as with the Infatuated condition)- if they are fighting or engaged in hostile interaction with the target, the target has a 50% chance to be unable to attack Kanpe each turn, and the effect lasts for 3-5 turns/18-30 seconds. If they are not, the target cannot attack Kanpe at all, and the duration is 10 turns/1 minute instead.)
- Confuse Ray (Kanpe sprays a creature they can see within 10 feet of them with their spray-can. If the creature is fighting or engaged in hostile interaction with Kanpe, they have a 50% chance of damaging themself slightly instead of taking an action on their turn (as with the Confused condition), and this ability lasts for 3-5 turns/18-30 seconds. If the creature is not, they have a 50% chance of not doing anything instead of taking an action as they stand around confused/disoriented, with the duration being 5 turns/30 seconds.
- Double Team (Kanpe moves in such a way that makes it seem as though there are multiple duplicates of themself, significantly raising their chance to dodge attacks each time they do it. This, like most stat-boosting moves, can be stacked up to 400% of their usual evasiveness, and lasts for a total 10 turns/1 minute, after which the effect disappears.)
- Thunderwave (Kanpe releases a jolt of static electricity, targetting a creature within 10 feet of them that they can see. On a successful hit, the creature gains the Paralyzed condition until they receive sufficient healing to recover from it, or until 1 hour has passed.)
Other Abilities/Ability Notes:
- Kanpe is a very effective liar, allowing them to easily fake aspects of their identity or shift blame for their actions onto others. This tends to make it easier for them to get into places they shouldn't be and get out of trouble when they're in it, but the more they lie to a specific person, the less likely that person will believe their lie. Individuals Kanpe regularly interacts with such as Meek, Ezekiel or Maybillee are essentially immune to their natural deceptiveness, so Kanpe has to make a more active attempt to deceive them when they wish to do so.
- Kanpe has somewhat impressive skills in acrobatic movement, allowing them to run away rather effectively by outmaneuvering their pursuers. They're more specialized with acrobatic movement in urban environments, with their skills being downgraded to just competent when they're placed in a more natural terrain.
- Kanpe has the ability to shapeshift, as a remnant of their previous life as a changeling. They can change forms to resemble any other Pokemon- however, when doing so, they do not gain any of the moves or abilities of those Pokemon, except the ones naturally present from their biology, such as the increased strength of a Machamp or the faster swimming of a Kingdra. (As a stylistic choice, forms Kanpe shapeshifts into will share Kanpe's yellow eyes if applicable, but this will not be acknowledged canonically as it's just there to communicate to the audience when a Pokemon is Kanpe.)
- Kanpe's primary weakness is that despite their love of getting into trouble and causing mischief, some of their natural biology is incredibly limiting to their stealth. Their spray can tail is fairly loud, and hard to control when they're moving- especially since it acts as an effective noisemaker when they try to move quickly. Additionally, while their glowing yellow eyes can be used effectively for intimidation, the fact they glow in dark areas where one would normally be trying to hide makes trying to go unseen difficult without closing their eyes and making themself more vulnerable to potential ambushes.
- Kanpe, unlike the average smeargle, is a Normal/Dark type instead of just a Normal type.
Other Notes:
- Kanpe, like the other characters with a "Former Form," was previously from a different plane of existence before being transported to the world of Pokemon by unknown means. When Zeke was helping Kanpe pick out a moveset for themself, they intentionally picked out the moves that would make them as annoying to fight as possible. (Zeke was particularly impressed by the choice of Attract- as Kanpe is a shapeshifter, a LOT of people would theoretically be attracted to them, so it was a very effective choice in their situation.)
- Kanpe is a jobhopper- they can't really keep any job for long because of their constant insistence on getting into trouble, and what few jobs they get that last usually end with Kanpe quitting out of boredom.
- Kanpe is secretly very insecure about themself, and does a lot of what they do for fleeting feelings of attention and validation. They don't know how to react to genuine companionship and affection, so they struggle in more personal relationships.
- They currently have a girlfriend named Sienna, who is a rather wealthy Lopunny. They claim they stay with her because she's rich and gives them all the money they could ever want, but anyone who knows them well would know they're lying- Sienna included.
- Kanpe does not have a biological sex. As they are a shapeshifter, they were born without any concrete gender, and only gained biological gender elements when they wanted to have them. Whereas most changelings would eventually "decide on" a gender to primarily present as, Kanpe instead chose the route of being whatever they feel like at the time, so they are Genderfluid.
- Kanpe's name is short for Kanpekina, which in Japanese roughly translates to "perfect" or "flawless." They... quite obviously chose this name for themself.
- In her relationship with Sienna, Kanpe acts as the housewife who does most of the chores- Sienna could easily hire a maid to clean their apartment, but Kanpe likes to do the chores to relieve stress.
- Kanpe, as a teenager, was Chaotic Evil- they were genuinely malicious and actively caused harm to people for their own gain. One such person was Essie, who he relentlessly bullied in high school- meeting Sienna helped him turn his life around and develop healthier emotional outlets, and while he hasn't lost his mischievous edge, he's a lot less violent and cruel than he used to be.
