The darker patterns show both where they are the most sensitive, and where they produce the most oil. They produce oil naturally everywhere at a glacially slow rate, but when excited or in danger they can rapidly speed up the production instinctively, and with some practice they can do it even at will. Their tickling oils are their evolved natural defense against predators on their planet.
