When people say canine, they mean dog (or maybe wolf, but usually dog).
There is also a lot more lore to the character that makes it different. Technically, the correct term is Keterathi, since she is from the planet Keterathi Prime, so even saying vulpine is wrong... but that's a level of pedantic that I don't expect anything aside from my own story to bother with, so fox is good enough. Basically just don't call her a canine to her face, or you will be shot.
