"I don't want to go! ;A;"
I saw
naur's image of Dr Whoof regenerating ( http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5486943 ), and I wanted to try my hand at it, see if I could make the effects and whatnot look a bit more like the art of the show (at least the foreground, not my crappy tardis background). So here we go.

Yup. Had several layers of effects based on the show here-
* the angular-zag thing that they use for a lot of the magic overlays in the series
* a glow layer on that
* Flame mane/tail
* glowing white eyes (Nightmare Moon uses that in the beginning of the second episode)
* background "splash" - used in the series to create a contrast between the pony and the background during magic effects (see the "elements of friendship" sequence)
a glowing "sun" overlay used in several shots as well.
When I started painting in the zigzag effect, I noticed it worked much better as an 'edge' effect for water-like look, and that worked better with the source material as well, so I went for that.

I think it kinda looks better with hands. :B Not your fault, just the reality of the base design.
Also, what happened to him to make him regen? (So not up on modern Dr. Who.) I didn't think Time Lords used a regeneration unless they were seriously dead. Like, you know, lying on floor, eyes closed, companion crying over form, etc.

The new series seems to like awake regenerations, at least partly so they can use niftier special effects. They also seem to have gotten rid of the 12-regeneration rule (mostly because they're on the 11th actor to play the Doctor now), they had one of them mention that he has HUNDREDS of regenerations available to him.
Both regenerations in the new series so far have been the result of MASSIVE radiation damage of one sort or another, so they were conscious but every cell in their body dying simultaneously. The master regenerates after he's shot by a death ray of some sort, which is probably roughly the same.

Well you should definitely check out the new MLP series. It's as good as the old one is bad. :D (designed for all audiences, written with lots of references that only adults would get, actual character depth and humor and plots, etc). You can find the episodes on Youtube. :D
