Style fan art? Tis something
Ok so i've shown a few experiments with me trying to do monotone stuff right? or doing grey scale to color?
Well I've found an artist that does something different, but also the same....
They use a black and white brush, that kinda blends a little but is more marker like, and create some amazing drawings. BUT, they pre set up a "blending mode" in their photoshop that allows for different colors depending on pressure, pen tilt, and a few other factors I don't understand... honestly the outcomes look so gooood! But it is essentaly a grey scale image with some effects added to give color... Since I'm messing about with that stuff I kinda wanna try emulating their style!
So the first hurdle was getting the blending mode/color effects all set up, seems hard to just copy if ya a total ideot like me... until ya see the dude has a twitter and uploaded a tutorial, convenient! hehe
Sadly that's where the convenience ends coz the "blending mode" is apparently a photoshop exclusive feature? like its intended for photography editing and less illustrations, and since clip studio is just illustrative stuff it hasn't got this feature.
The dude did mention that "Gradient Maps" are similar, and clips studio has them so I messed about with em.
Looking at how he messed with the blending mode's sliders I figured out how to mess with the gradient maps in a similar way, which is what I did. I just need to work on the coloring a bit as that's very different and a bit more of a "eye ball it" situation.
So ye, the technical side is all sorted. Just needs a few tests.
The practical side however, ye this style is VERY different to myn.
I draw a sketch, line art, color, shading. Think its a fairly common method tbh. But he just, draws, no sketch or line arts just drawing. He refers to it more as sculpting as its an "additive process".. I did ceramics for 3 years, this feels nothing like sculpting to me XD. But that's fine coz the feeling he described comes across well enough that I did this for my first real attempt.
Think my main issue drawing wise was how hesitant I was, I tried to use bigger brush sizes for areas I wasn't familiar with and tried to block out a general shape. But that resulted in the face being more detailed than the body... think that's an issue he might of faced coz he focuses on the face first, so ill give that a try next. See if it forced me to carry on that level of detail.
I'm gonna push through with this, see how close I can get with clip studio as I do have plans to develop the style into a hybrid of me and his. Like, I can see that working out if I do it right. But before I can attempt that I need to learn how to do his style before I mess with it into something new.
I'm also tempted to purchase photoshop for a single month at that point, because it would let me try the blend mode stuff AND see whats so differet.. is photoshop actualy justified in its price or is it just bragging some extra features. Like the blending mode.
Oh and here is the artists twitch, he is fantastic so do treat yourself to a stream if ya see he is live at somepoint.
