Phoenixes are elementally-aligned birds who represent the cycle of life and death. Phoenixes are also like any other bird, too - they reproduce through eggs, if they want to. But there is another way that new phoenixes are born - some of them decide to...annex others into their species.
It might just be an ascended bird, like a blue jay or crow, or a wise hundred-year-old-parrot. But at the same time, humans can be deemed worthy to be "Rebirthed" as a phoenix. Typically, humans hear a song that comes from a phoenix that "invites" them to join them.
Sometimes you hear it in a storm...or maybe your radio (like this Daryn person here) suddenly starts to pick up a strange frequency that broadcasts the song directly to your soul.
