One of our cats came into the house with something. I was unable to see just what. My wife managed to get him and found he had a baby bunny which she took away. I then took it back out into the desert, a couple hundred yards here, and turned it loose. Last seen was its tail headed east bound as fast as it could run.
I hope the Easter Bunny don't hold it against us and we get no eggs this year.
Please forgive the phuzzy phone photo.

How old was the cat that came in with this little rabbit?
Good thing your wife took it away, I don't think little rabbits make good playmates!
Well fed house-cats are not an indigenous dessert species and I suppose their presence impacts the balance of the wildlife somewhat.
(but I don't give cats much chance against a rattler)

He's an older cat. In fact he is overweight, he has plenty of food available and does not need to hunt but it's what cats do.
The two females we have were strays. Both were kittens when they joined the family. One, orange and white wandered in as we were moving our son to a new place and decided to stay. The other black and white we found under a bush just outside our fence in the desert a couple of years ago.
The male we got about the same time as the orange and white but he had been living with someone else in our son's apartment and then had simply moved in. So when the apartment was sold to new owners and they evicted all tenants he came along. The practice is common in that they find it easier to just toss everyone and then substantially raise the rent for any new tenants rather then fight with existing ones to do it.
We have lived here since I retired back in 2005 so the cats have had 5 years to learn about things here including the coyotes that think cats are tasty.

There's no school like reality, this goes for cats too
About 'tossing tenants'... here the law protects them to a degree that you can't 'toss' them like that as long as they pay the rent. While nice for respectable tenants, it sure makes me think twice about offering my house for rent, should the need arise .
Oh, and that is without taking into account your horror stories of the down-lived state of your house!

Here they can't easily remove a bad tenant either. First you need to ask them to leave. If they do not, then you must go to court and file an eviction notice on them. This takes about 3 months while giving them time to do massive damage. And that 3 months is just to get the court order. Then it must be served in person to the tenant by a US Marshall. If after another 3 months of them not being able to find said tenant, they can post it on the door for another 30 days after which time you need to meet the marshal and they will sign the property over to you again. NOW if the tenant returns the police will come and arrest them but not until you have done all the above.
