I get a lot of people asking how to use Paint Tool SAI. So here's a quick tutorial using one of my recent works, illustrating how I do that thing I do.
Please feel free to redistribute for free, or link to it, or whatever. I like knowing people know how to use their tools properly. I can't grant you mad drawing skills, but I can give you some technical knowledge to help put some of those mad skills to use!
Any questions? Comment, please! Appreciate the help? I'm happy to accept PayPal donations at panthera2[at]yahoo.com (please note on the PayPal payment that it is a donation).

Make sure you have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed. You can get it here: http://get.adobe.com/reader/
Hehe, you shade a lot like I do: smack the shadows in en masse, then 'paint with light'
Can I ask - your linework shows many lines tapering at the end. Is this an option with SAI (i.e. part of the brush stroke) or is it all pressure responsive (like you'd have to do with Photoshop)?
I foolishly wasted my 30 day trial by installing it right before WoW Cataclysm launched and thus never used it at all, but if it would do the above, it'd be worth paying for just for that!

It is pressure responsive... BUT there is a tool where you can change the pressure of each point on the lines. So you can draw a thick line, and then selectively taper certain areas of it manually. Not as quick or easy as pressure sensitivity, but you can get the same look without a tablet, yes.
Following up - bought SAI and tried it out tonight. Very happy with the inking tools, even though I've just tried the basics, can already see it will catapult my digital inking forward. Seems to have pressure smoothing as well as direction, so not getting the thick/thin blobs I was worried about - just need a bit of practise to get that nice taper effect I was looking for!
Thanks again for the tutorial and getting me interested ^^

Thank you so much for this! I've been using a slightly similar technique in Photoshop (multiply layer and erasing where the light shines) but I've been wanting to move over to Sai for a while. The main obstacle was that the brushes didn't nearly work the same way as they did in photoshop so that really threw me off. Thank you so much for this, it will help immensely!
IT IS PROBABLY REDUNDANT BY NOW; but thanks for posting this <3
My gallery is empy right now, because I still just can't get where I want to be yet, in my drawing ability. But I try new stuff almost every night ~ TLDR: things like this are awesome for me, thanks for sharing.
