Tikal will often send each of the six characters from the game back into her past to have them see bits and pieces of her life that lead up to the assualt on the Master Emerald that housed Chaos. Her dad, the ruler at the time, tried to stop the prophecy by destroying it which resulted in killing his own daughter in the process, angering Chaos to wipe out the entire echidna race out of anger of seeing Tikal suffer. SA1 had a few serious moments that were outside of E102 Gamma's story.
The Lost World stage for Sonic's story level still has the most disturbing soundtrack to me and sadly, it always will. It used to give me nightmares as a kid, especially with the giant rock snake tnat was in one of the temple rooms, but I've long since gotten over it.
In this interpretation I did, Sonic gets sent back into Tikal, but he's shrunken down because I love this approach way too much. Depending on the circumstance Tikal will usually see the character sent to her past or not, but Sonic was seen this time. The young Princess takes notice of him via one of her Chao pointing him out. She then orders him not to move so she can grab him.
