San Francisco from Alcatraz island. You can see the Bay Bridge off to the left, as well as most of the city to the right. Down below are the remains of the dormitory houses that the guard's families lived in. Yes, the guards not only lived on the island, but their wives and children did as well. They'd be shuttled to and from school on one of the twelve boat trips that happened daily. It was a very safe community. One of the kids who grew up there said it was like they lived in a little country town with a really big jail.
