That happened in the anime Jewelpet Sunshine, especially when a guy named Mikage Shiraishi turns himself into a mascot lion Jewelpet, named Granite, to be with the Rabbit mascot, Ruby, to stay with her. In the next season after this, called Kira Deco, he's her official boyfriend the new protagonist's neighboring town. In Future AU's he's basically an implied love interest or a friend.
