It had been many, many years since Flare lost her wing. Nearing 120 years old, right at the tail end of her life, she had already long forgone the dream of flying again. However, the story of the dragon who helped evacuate a village from a volcano slowly rang throughout the world. And, with the invention of mechanized flight for humans, the possibility of flightless dragons returning to the skies grew from a distant dream to an inevitable reality. Unfortunately, airplanes are difficult for adult dragons to use given their large size. However, with the eventual rise and proliferation of hot air balloons, the prospect of returning to the skies became more possible than ever. And, the people who had heard of Flare's heroism decided to try and help give something back to her.

Flare, once she heard of the plan, was ecstatic. Everything took a while to get ready, getting a balloon that would be large enough to carry a dragon was difficult. Watching everything get set up, Flare was certainly nervous. She hadn't flown in so long, and if anything went wrong, she couldn't catch herself. But, even the simple prospect of flight overpowered any fear she had, and when the balloon was ready, she climbed into her basket and balloon began to rise

Feeling the cool air, watching birds fly below, and seeing the landscape get smaller and smaller. For the first time in nearly one hundred years, Flare finally got to experience the things most dragons get to experience daily. Things she hadn't experienced since her youth. It obviously wasn't the same, she still didn't have the freedom that wings would've given her, she couldn't go wherever she wanted. But, at this point, she didn't care. She was just happy to take flight again.
