Piano Solo: Force Field (The Crystal Maze theme)
This is my attempt at a piano solo arrangement of the theme tune to a legendary British game show, "The Crystal Maze;" the song itself is entitled "Force Field." In the game, six players take on a variety of challenges divided into four categories: mental, physical, skill, and mystery, and must complete each challenge before time expires, or else they are trapped in the room and out of the game unless a teammate sacrifices a crystal to rescue them. (They are allowed to leave the room if time is close to running out and they haven't completed the challenge.) If they succeed at the challenge and get out of the room before time expires, they earn a crystal. (If they breech a specific game's rules, they may automatically get trapped in the room.)
The maze itself has four zones: Aztec, Industrial, Medieval, and Futuristic (although one of the zones was later replaced by Ocean). The team captain has responsibility for choosing who plays what type of game in each zone; should the captain get trapped in a room, the designated vice-captain takes over the decision making. After a set amount of time in each zone, the team then goes to the Crystal Dome.
The Crystal Dome is filled with gold and silver tokens; the team is allowed 5 seconds in the dome for each crystal they accumulated (which begins and ends on the host's whistle). The team's goal is to grab as many gold tokens as they can while avoiding the silver tokens, and place the tokens in a container that closes when time expires; note that the dome has fans that blow all the tokens around, making it hard to grab them.
Once outside the dome, the host tallies up the score, with each gold token adding 1 point and each silver token subtracting 1 point. If the net total is at least 100 or more points, the team wins the grand prize.
Nickelodeon would later produce a US version of the show; in that version, a family competes in the maze. The family wins $100 per point after grabbing tokens in the Crystal Dome, or $25,000 if they accumulate 100 points or more.
