Saury has a really thick, bony, gray exoskeleton on his head and abdomen. The dark and light blue parts are still exoskeleton, but with a scaly, blue keratin sheath over it. The dark purple, almost black, latex-like parts between the joints are soft, fluid producing flesh akin to an amphibian's skin. They secrete liquid sometimes to lubricate saury's joints, clean out any dirt or detritus stuck between the exoskeleton plates, and to help in cooling.
