Riija had an encounter where she had to remove her own arm to get to safety. While a prosthetic was installed it took several years for her to accept it as her new limb. Once cannot cast Thrones or wield Lein in any capacity while their Leinic-System is disrupted. This happens when the body and mind aren't whole. After a great deal of practice, learning, meditation, and stress... Riija finally got her ability to use her Lein back.

As a note blightlings almost always wear their masks almost all of the time. Riija is depicted in just her underwear though.
