Operation Ragnarok Chapter 4: Game Plan
Alrighty, about time we had a breather chapter in Operation Ragnarok. Starts up about a week after the last one and sets up for this all out war Atrimel's after just to get his hands on Kajex. Chapter 5 is gonna be AMAZING I'll say that right now
Days had passed since Atrimel’s actions at the arena took place. Kajex had been unconscious since then and resting on Lilith’s couch. The whole city was completely decimated by a rampaging kaiju Kaja as the veil that had enveloped the city completely expanded over the entirety of the Orrei region and now leaking over into the other regions. Miteru never came to help with any of this while the small resistance awaited for Kajex to wake up. Lilith even helped Cherry salvage some equipment from her lab in the midst of it all.
“Have you figured out anything about those collars?” Naomi asked Cherry as she typed away on a laptop, trying to find a glimmer of hope in Atrimel’s strategy, “Any way to get them off?”
“No way in hell can we get those things off,” Cherry sighed as she downloaded a schematic of them to her laptop, “The only two ways we can get them off are either get the remote from Atrimel, or somehow tear them off despite the bullshit magic constantly repairing them.” Their bodies began to shake a bit as they said those last few words
“And the only one who can get them off like that is Kajex,” Leah remarked as she looked towards her unconscious son, trying not to cry. Kajex however, was stuck in that void once again. It was all he was dreaming about. He was running, tears in his eyes now that all of those painful memories had blasted him at full force. He wanted to run away from his past all over again.
“N-No!” Kajex exclaimed as he clenched his skull, “D-Don’t make me remember! I don’t wanna remember!” He kept this up until he fumbled and fell to his knees, tears falling onto the floor in front of him. He’d take his hands off of his head and look back at his left arm.
“Th-They…” Kajex muttered as his whole body began to shake uncontrollably, “... THEY CUT OFF MY ARM!!! THEY BURNED ME TO A CRISP!!!”
“And they must suffer for it,” the childish voice began to echo once more, “All they cared about was getting their sick enjoyment out of seeing us suffer through whatever they felt like doing that day.”
“IT’S YOUR FAULT!!!” Kajex cried out, tears soaking his jacket like raindrops, “IF YOU DIDN’T START CREEPING UP ON ME IN MY HEAD I WOULDN’T BE FORCED TO REMEMBER!!!” The voice quickly grew agitated from those words.
“YOU CAN’T RUN FROM YOURSELF!!!” the voice echoed in pure rage, “I AM YOU!!!” Kajex suddenly went silent, unable to react to those words. He just sat there, wallowing in his own tears before beginning to glance behind him as a second cry of tears began to echo.
“You are…” Kajex muttered as he caught a glimpse of a riolu crying behind him, “... me?” Before he could even get a full look at the mysterious riolu, he suddenly jumped awake. Panting heavily as a mix of tears and sweat began to pour down his face. Everyone would look towards the lucario with a mix of joy and stress as Leah and Naomi glomped all over him.
“You’re awake!” Naomi cried as she clung to Kajex’s side, “You’re finally awake!”
“I-I thought we lost you!” Leah cried as well, her tail subconsciously wagging behind her as tears once again soaked her dress.
“H-Huh?” Kajex wheezed as he finally registered his surroundings, “Where am I?”
“You’re at my house Kajex,” Lilith smiled as she came into the room, her eyes also filling with their own set of tears, “When I freed you from Kaja’s grip I brought you immediately here to recover. You went unconscious before I even used a warp spell.” The two let go of Kajex to let him catch his breath, wiping away their tears as Kajex finally pieced together what happened.
“O-Oh…” Kajex stuttered as he shook his head a bit, “... how long was I out?”
“Almost a week,” Cherry rolled her eyes as she continued to examine whatever she was able to hack into, “Luckily for once we had Lilith and that asshole of a son of hers make a barrier even that monster can’t break through.”
‘You KNOW I can hear you right?” Cain’s voice echoed down the hall. Kajex got off of the couch, fumbled on his feet for a moment before getting his bearings and checking out Cherry’s laptop. He saw some schematics for the collars currently pulled up onto the screen.
“So Kaja’s still under his control?” Kajex asked cautiously, already knowing what the answer was.
“Indeed she is,” Lilith sighed as she fixed her hat to cover her eyes a little, “I didn’t have time to try and get her freed and warp us out of there.”
“It’s a miracle that you could break free honestly,” Cherry said as she looked up at the lucario, “What made you and Kaja so different in that regard? Your bodies are about identical in genetics.” Kajex didn’t think much of it at first, but one thing stood out in his mind… and it filled him with fear.
“The shock experiments,” Kajex remarked as he fumbled back, Leah catching him, “My body has an innate resistance to electricity that developed from those tests.”
“And when Kaja got separated from you she didn’t inherit that,” Leah remarked, holding Kajex close to help him calm down.
“That’s something at least,” Naomi remarked, trying not to trigger Kajex’s PTSD as his face grew mortified.
“At least that means we got your help now to get arceus over here to fix this mess,” Lilith sighed as she looked towards the gray sky, “This veil’s the main thing we need to get rid of.” Kajex looked towards the sky as he calmed down. The gray skies reached as far as the eye can see and a sense of unease continued to wash over him.
“Miteru hasn’t shown up to fix this at all?” Kajex asked, his legs feeling like jelly as he turned back towards Cherry.
“This veil is the perfect counter to her,” Naomi remarked as she held his hand.
“This thing is designed so that anybody looking in sees everything as perfectly fine in Orrei,” Cherry began as she stretched her arms back, “And with what Naomi says about her interactions between you two, it sounds like arceus is always on the outside looking in whenever she talks with you with her avatar.” It was at that moment Kajex put two and two together.
“... so that way she doesn’t see a problem and Atrimel can continue to do his thing,” Kajex said as his heart began to sink in his chest.
“So in order to get her over here we gotta get rid of this veil,” Cherry nodded in agreement, her eyes shimmering with confidence, “And to do that we gotta get to the source of it in Orrei Palace.” Cherry pulled up security footage from cameras she hacked into all around the palace. Guards were walking around the place on patrol like robots with the same blank stare. They knew the guards didn’t want to do this in the first place.
“But I can’t analyze the generator’s weak spot unless I can get up close to it,” Cherry groaned as she swapped to the camera watching the generator, “Atrimel kept all the schematics for it locked up tighter than I can hack into.”
“S-So we just gotta sneak you into the palace?” Kajex asked, a bit of hope sparking in his eyes.
“Basically,” Cherry shrugged as she looked towards Kajex like it was no big deal.
“But there comes another problem to sneak her into the palace,” Lilith began as Cherry swapped off those cameras, “Kaja.” The new camera feeds showed a building sized Kaja patrolling the streets. Plumes of dust and chunks of debris flying into the air. She had a permanent, savage grin strewn across her face as saliva dripped down either side. Leah alone was mortified over the deranged expressions Kaja was forced to show. Kajex was hyperventilating over her current state, Naomi trying to calm him down.
“Kaja sweetie…” Leah said in a somber tone, trying not to cry as her heartbeat grew irregular and uneasy.
“So… we need to free Kaja before we can make any moves?” Kajex asked, trying to keep himself composed as he looked at the footage.
“Indeed,” Lilith remarked as she put her hand on Kajex’s shoulder, “I tried to subdue her while you were out, but even I can’t get that collar off.”
“Not to mention the fact that the guards are also after her every time she tried so she had to blow her energy out before she could even touch that dammed collar,” Cherry groaned as she closed the camera, “And… that’s why we need you.”
“W-Wait me?” Kajex stammered as he fumbled back a bit, “Wh-Why me?”
“Because you were the only one who could tear it off despite the regeneration potion’s effects,” Naomi began, herself holding him tightly, “But… you’d have to fight Kaja.” Kajex immediately recalled back to the fight they had in the Grand Clash. He knew things could get ugly fast if he lost control again… but at the same time he knew he was the only one who had a chance to free her.
“If I can get some backup on the guards trying to back her up I think I can manage it,” Kajex said as confidently as he could.
“You sure?” Leah asked concernedly as she wiped away her tears, “I-I don’t want to see you-”
“I’m the only one who can save her,” Kajex assured his mom, summoning his Keyblade to his hand, “It’s only me…” Naomi clenched Kajex’s hand as tight as she could. She knew someone had to be there to call him back to his senses if he did descend into the darkness in his own mind again.
“I’ll help you Kajex,” Naomi assured him as confidently she herself could muster, “I won’t let you slip like that ever again.” Kajex and Naomi would fixate their gazes on one another. Their mutual trust in one another, giving Kajex the strength he needs to go through with this harebrained scheme.
“Thank you Naomi,” Kajex smiled back towards the mienshao.
“It’s what I’m here for,” Naomi cried, her face growing flushed as she clenched her chest tightly. As they said this however, Lilith had an idea. One that could completely catch Atrimel off guard and could save Orrei in one fell swoop.
“And since more guards will be after Kajex I’ll go with you two,” Lilith smiled as she walked up to the two, “And I have an idea for you Cherry.”
“It’d better be a good one,” Cherry groaned as she looked towards the witch with disappointment as always.
“While the three of us deal with Kaja and the majority of Atrimel’s army, you and Cain sneak into the palace and already start tackling the generator while he’s distracted,” Lilith smiled as she glanced towards Cain’s room, “He can at least use a cloaking spell.” Cherry thought on it for a moment before giving her answer.
“At least it’s not you I’m stuck with,” Cherry rolled her eyes as she looked at Lilith as she said that.
“EY WHAT THE HELL MOM?!” Cain exclaimed as he stormed out of his room, overhearing the whole discussion, “Why not just wait until you do what you gotta do with that kaiju on the streets and THEN go after the veil?!”
“Because if we get him while distracted it’ll be less likely someone will spot anything funny with the device,” Leah remarked as she showed her own confidence, hand clenching her chest tightly. Everyone looked at Leah, their hearts skipping beats at those words.
“You wanna help me hack?” Cherry asked awkwardly as she stared at the giant lucario.
“I know Atrimel’s thought process better than even you two,” Leah nodded as she glanced towards Cherry and Lilith, “I may notice stuff you don’t.” Kajex was now sweating bullets for Leah’s safety, but knowing she could be a big help to them.
“J-Just be careful mom,” Kajex stuttered as he clenched his Keyblade tightly.
“Uuuuugh,” Cain groaned, knowing this whole plan was gonna go up in flames at any moment, “But you’re right mom, I can use a cloaking spell to make things easier on us. Just try and make it fast you two because I can’t keep it up for as long.”
“I’ll prepare a vial of instant-teleportation potion before we all head out okay?” Lilith smiled as she glanced towards her cauldron, “That way you three can escape in an instant if something goes wrong.”
“Works for me,” they all said in unison as they prepared for the counterattack with a mixture of fear and confidence in their tones. Inside the palace however, Atrimel was sitting happily on his throne. His chin rested in his hand as he kept an eye on all the security footage in the castle. Thorya was nearby, chained to the wall by their wrists and ankles as they tried desperately to break free.
“It’s pointless to struggle Thorya,” Atrimel smirked before glancing towards them, “You can’t escape being the heir to my new world.”
“What the HELL is your problem?! Thorya gritted as they continued to struggle, their body aching from exhaustion, “If ya wanted me to join you you could’ve just given me one of those stupid collars too!”
“There’s one simple reason I didn’t,” Atrimel sighed as his eye seemingly changed colors for a split second, “Our tails attached to our necks cover the spot where the nanochip must go to take control. You’re just going to remain there until you accept that this is the world I want you to rule in.”
“THIS ISN’T A WORLD I WANNA RULE OVER IN A BILLION YEARS!!!” Thorya shouted as they struggled to break free harder than ever, tears streaming down their cheeks, “All this world you’re trying to build up is is just a totalitarian dictatorship where the only one with free rule is you!”
“Oh but you’ll come to,” Atrimel scoffed at such a counterpoint as if it was a worthless protest, “When arceus can’t fight back against our new rule then you’ll relish in having such power at your fingertips.”
“No way in hell ya lunatic,” Thorya grumbled under their breath as they turned away from him, clearly unable to break through Atrimel’s psychotic state.
