I've finally finished it. Been sitting on this for way too long, just wanted to get it out and move on. This will be the last part of the prologue. The first chapter will take place in the city, with the main characters, or at least one of them, finding out the struggle of being a human with bad history associated to them, in a world full of so many different creatures. Not sure how releases will look like timewise, it's quite a grand idea I'm having for something that I do occasionally as a hobby, so it's gonna be quite sporadic, but I haven't given up yet. Cheers.
We walked for a while longer after taking a lengthy rest, and one thing was getting quite apparent: I was getting very hungry by then. Kate reassured me that we'd have something to eat at the "Landmark city" we were going to. She couldn't tell me much, and I could understand since we were in the middle of a big forest. Before talking about cities in general she warned me to stay close by, apparently humans don't have the greatest reputation among the people out there.
-Can you at least tell me why? You seem really secretive and I'm just… confused still.
-I'm just waiting for a better moment to tell you everything, a place where we can rest a little better, or at least I can. I wouldn't call this forest safe exactly. But since you insist, I can tell you a little. Collectively humans had a very conflicting behaviour to everyone else. I could even call it a bit entitled, conquering whatever they saw fit and if things didn't go their way they opted to fight, often getting into wars as an easy way out. Eventually it got to the point where they'd be banished behind a barrier they cannot cross. A barrier we are walking through at the moment. And should one make it through regardless… well, the population usually has their own ideas on treating them… some quite disturbing even depending on where you venture. It's a short version of it, but that's more or less how it went.
-O-oh huh. Well that doesn't make things much better.
-Like I said, stick to me and you'll be fine. We cannot separate even for a moment for the time being. It doesn't really help that a human was involved in an incident relatively recently, and I'm the one trying to fix things.
-I guess it's a little bit reassuring… I mean having you next to me, you seem strong.
-Let's not get into a situation where we'd need to test that.
It seemed reasonable enough, not like I'd want to separate anyway, I was already anxious enough! Soon enough I noticed the trees starting to get slightly more scarce, and so more light would be coming into the forest. I felt a slight bit of excitement and fear at the same time, not knowing what was on the other side. I stood closer to Kate than before as the landscape beyond the forest started coming into view. Immediately I could sense the air feeling different, the colours apart from the grassy green being more diverse and vibrant in the distance. One thing stood out among the fields though, a big city standing around a river, with a signature tower right in the middle. "That is the Landmark of Unity" Kate said as we looked out to the horizon. I was stunned by the view, the energy around me feeling entirely different, like coming out of the forest really was like crossing through a barrier. The sun was already setting over the horizon despite it being quite early afternoon, and the wind softly blew over us. After a while of just standing and admiring the view I asked "So… do we just go there?", and she replied promptly "Well yeah, I don't want you starving out here. That city is our best shot at getting you acquainted with this world.". It looked to be quite a large city, and awfully human looking, partially at least. With clouds slowly moving over the horizon I had figured we should start moving. I didn't really feel like getting soaked. While approaching Kate filled me in a little bit on the place:
The Landmark of Unity is the last city that was built in collaboration of local people and humans. That is why it might look a bit familiar.
Are there any humans left there?
No, humans had all been banished, but there still might be a number of people that won't look down on you… that much. I still expect people to be spreading rumours. Once we get noticed the whole city will know we're there, I'm just hoping we'll find someone willing to cooperate.
Will they want to hurt me?
Not within the city, and not on my watch. So you're sticking with me.
O-okay, I will.
