Though such tales of races are apocryphal, the rations often did awfully wormy

The first O'Brien novel I read actually bored me. I forget which it was, but the first half of the action was in Britain, where Aubrey was on leave or something, buying a house, planning a political career, complaining about servents and cooks, etc. Another main theme seemed to be whatsisname's spying, which seemed doubtfully sophisticated for the time. In any case, I had to read a couple of other books before I knew that the first one was an exception.
I fail to see why people make such a glorification of a time in US history of Death, Violence and Inhumanity.
you are proud of your History of Murder????
I am not proud of Canada's history of Violence even if Eastern Canada reenacts the battles......
do people stop and think of the Issues behind this, the Lies and the Hypocrisy??
HONESTLY????

Well, glorification is not exactly what many of us are into in the Re-enacting thing. Partly it is the comradery of men under arms, playing at history, historical education (a very strong factor, undoing the revisionists and Southern appologists). And the fun of rustic camping and discharging large calibre firearms at each other while wearing hot and itchy woolens in mid-summer.
Looking far enough back, everyone in history is a villian, especially from the smug distance and convienance of hindsight. Arguably, the greater sin would to have not fought the war. And now, to not remember the nasty facts of it is almost as bad.
