Last summer, on a short visit to Cyprus to see my dad, I dragged him to the Nea Paphos Archaeological Site, which lies on the south-western side of the city of Paphos, right on the coast. The site is likely to have been built by order of Nicocles, the last king of Paphos, sometime in the 4th century BC. By the 2nd century BC, it had replaced Salamis in the east as the largest city on the island, under the rule of the Ptolemic Dyansty. Yes, those Ptolamies – they ruled both over Egypt and Cyprus up until Cleopatra’s death, when they got swallowed by the Roman Empire.
Excavations on the site began in the 1960s under a Polish team, and while the site now serves as a tourist sightseeing hotspot (indeed, it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site) excavations still go on there to uncover the history of this great city.
In the background are the columns of the House of Theseus, a large villa that was likely used to house the Roman governor. Inside is a large mosaic of Theseus battling the Minotaur, and while Atlas is often depicted as the one holding the world upon his shoulders, I like to think of Theseus’ columns holding up the sea in this shot.
