Once upon a time, far far away, there is a valley called Taiyang Valley. There, it was protected by its guardian, a dragon. Her scales shimmered with the sun, being a beautiful golden hue. She was loved by all for her majesty and she dutifully did her job. In turn, they showered her with offerings and worshiped her as their local deity.
All was well.
But the golden dragon was arrogant in her position.
Slowly, she grew more and more conceited. She stopped caring for the valley and only looked after her own desires. Such as making sure her golden scales continued to shine. The Dragon would bring concubines to her sacred shrine from the valley below, neglecting her sacred duties. Such as the Yokai who took residence and began to sway the humans, as well as neglecting to bring rain and allowing the valley to suffer droughts and wildfires. The people and animals suffered without their guardian.
One day, the Valley Dragon was confronted by her own mother, Hutou - the Dragon of Long Lake.
She scolded her daughter, but the arrogant dragon did not listen.
Furious, Hutou, began her daughter's punishment. She placed many powerful spells on her daughter. One of which took away her majestic scales.
"What did you do to me?!" The Valley Guardian cried out, "my scales! My beautiful golden scales! They're as black as soot!"
"You cared more about your scales than your duties as a dragon. And thus, they will never shine again until you learn your lesson."
The Valley Guardian tried to retaliate against her mother and conjure a torrent of water, but she found her powers...gone. More and more, the former guardian was stripped of her magical abilities and reduced to little more than a mortal.
Finally, Hutou took away her daughter's name - making it even so she could not call herself by that name and no mortal could until she regained her status as a guardian. Hutou then gave her daughter a new name. A name that better matched her daughter's scales, which were black as night. More befitting of a deceptive creature who misused her authority.
