On the night of the storm, the nightfury and his pet wolf took refuge in the small, cozy cabin.
Raindrops pouring down from the skies for hours upon hours, pattering against the wooden rooftop as it did the forest floor. The constant onslaught of rain streaming down the roof was occasionally broken up by the low rumbling of thunder and crackling of lightning, which illuminated the night sky with as much vigor as the sun. It lasted for only a split-second, however, and despite the ruckus from beyond the walls, the howling winds and trickling water and rustling leaves, the pair took little notice of it.
Instead, they paid attention to the crackling of the fireplace, the dim light flickering from the pit, and the soft, orange glow on each other scales and fur. The flames were brighter earlier that night, but after they consumed all the dried grass, twigs, and logs, it gradually reduced to mere cinders. And as the lighted faded little by little, so did the warmth it provided.
But it didn’t matter. As the night continued, as the storm worsened, as the fire smothered its fuel to ashes, the wolf shared his body with his master. He lovingly embraced him, lying over him and providing him warmth with his dark, thick coat. And as he did so, he couldn’t resist burying his snout into the dragon’s thick neck, curling his arms around his burly chest, inhaling his comforting scent—and then he let out a relieved, satisfied rumble.
A scaly paw wound into the fur atop his skull. It gently stroked him from his scalp to the back of his neck, rustling up his fur before smoothing it out. Over and over, the nightfury fondled the wolf’s soft locks before his fingers eventually weaved towards his back. It settled in place, but not before tightening the embrace. They laid there in silence; after all, they didn’t need words to ruin this intimate moment.
Even as the light faded from the room, and as thunder rumbled and raindrops pattered from outside, the master and his pet drifted into a peaceful slumber.
