I just watched a show about man eating lions, and the three they talked about either had no manes at all, or very small manes. I decided that would be a good concept for a villain character. The partially maned lion just looks like it should be a bad guy.

It was mostly about a more recent lion in Rufiji, though it did talk about the Tsavo lions.
