Spring, Twelfth Year of the Xin Zhuo Emperor
“Good news everyone!” Lord Buzhong exclaimed almost immediately as he leaped out from his gilded palanquin, his beads and jewelry clattering with the enthusiastic motions.
Standing with her assembly of guards with her paws clasped behind her back, Qing frowned. She knew what that meant.
The entire household of Lord Buzhong, all 300 staff members and guards had lined up in front of the entryway courtyard as ordered when their lord finally returned from the Imperial Palace of Anping. The fact that Qing and her security team had been dismissed and ordered to return home only a few hours after sending the Minister of Ceremonies off to General Meng Wu's parade, to be replaced by the Emperor’s own Shence Guard, had strongly hinted at something important coming back with Lord Buzhong when he finally returned, a suspicion that was confirmed at this very moment.
The Buzhong Household would be stabling another one of the Emperor’s exotic beasts.
Lord Buzhong was Minister of Ceremonies, it was widely held among the populace, because despite his general lack of merit, abilities or competence, he was a genial and generous host, skilled in the powers of obsequiousness and ostentatious displays of wealth and power, and simply a gifted entertainer. The lord's extravagant parties and beautiful gardens had quickly attracted the attention of Emperor Tianzhong himself, who having just successfully retaken the throne was eager to display his return to legitimacy. The upjumped merchant was raised to the Ministry of Rites and showered with titles and gold, and in exchange Lord Buzhong performed the rituals and organized the ceremonies and hosted the celebrations that supported the Emperor’s Mandate of Heaven. The big quarterly parties held in Lord Buzhong’s own gardens soon became the height of the social season in the capital, attended by the Emperor himself and his ministers and consort and courtiers, and to be extended an invitation to them was taken by all to be granted an entrance into the highest echelons of power in Jiangshan. Providing security at those events, frequently with her former Imperial comrades, Qing generally disliked the pomp and chaos and inanity that also came with these celebrations, but the dragon also realized just how lucky she had been to be given this sinecure position after the Incident, so she kept her muzzle tightly shut.
Lord Buzhong’s duties soon also included housing strange exotic creatures. Emperor Tianzhong was interested in anything that would further his claim to legitimacy, so the last years of his reign he began to collect creatures from the edge of the world, saying that they were signs of Heaven’s favor: giant crowned serpents from the Southern rainforests, scaly, long-snouted creatures with hair from the Northeast, winged horses from the Mountains to the Southeast. After a recreational session consuming cold-food powder, the Emperor asked for Lord Buzhong to house the suo in his gardens, to which the latter heartily agreed. The next thing Qing knew, she was desperately trying to retrain angry creatures, corral escaping beasts, and together with Head Supervisor Qiong and a good chunk of the household and guards figuring out how to feed and care for a dozen types of creatures. Eventually her friend Eshak the Sha managed to take care of the bulk of the issues outside of pursuing and recapturing runaways, but it was not a task that the blue dragon had any interest in continuing.
Unfortunately it kept continuing: impressed by the care for his beasts, Emperor Tianzhong sent more, and then Tianzhong’s son and successor Xin Zhuo continued the tradition of collecting fantastic suo and sending them to be stabled at Lord Buzhong’s garden. There were now nearly three score creatures kept in an large section of the grounds as a menagerie and Eshak led the largest division Lord Buzhong’s household after Supervisor Qiong and Qing herself. The blue dragon did not know how the Sha managed those creatures on top of his gardening duties, but Eshak managed somehow. Still Qing did not like the idea of more creatures being given to her friend, and feared that one day his juggling act would crumble and all havoc would break loose.
As expected, more duties were being given.
Having successfully escorted Lord Buzhong home, the Shence troops then quickly lined up in front of the main gate, and an Imperial wagon pulled up, drawn by a half dozen horses. As the large silk-covered crate was slowly pushed down the ramp by a score of servants, it began to shake from within, and Qing caught a familiar scent.
The dragon from the Western Regions.
Oh no.
This will be a difficult case.
Lord Buzhong quickly interrupted Qing’s thoughts, boisterously leaping atop the dais before his household and raising his arms into the air.
“The Emperor has adopted a new pet, an exotic suo from the West, and he has charged us to take care of it in his honor!” Lord Buzhong cheerfully announced to his workers.
The household personnel all bowed. There would be no opposition, no contrary statements. The servants did as they were told.
Stroking his beard, the lord quickly pointed at his Head Gardener.
“Eshak, you have done great work in handling some of the Emperor’s previous pets, I want you to take charge of this one as well.”
The Sha bowed in response. “I obey my lord.”
The lord then turned to his Household Supervisor. “Supervisor Qiong will provide any workers and supplies to Eshak in support of this new pet.”
“I obey, my lord.”
Lord Buzhong finally turned to his Captain of the Guard. “Now, Qing, the new suo is said to be a little…unbroken. I want you to handle any sort of trouble that may arise. You are a master at taking care of these things, but I don’t think I need to remind you just how important it is not to harm the Emperor’s creatures.”
As the covered crate was slowly pushed towards the stables, shaking violently with muffled roars emitting from within, the blue dragon bowed as well, though signs of displeasure were clearly plastered across her snout.
“Yes. I obey, my lord.”
