Diplomatic Relations 40 Found Something
Chapter 40: Found Something
Sam finally ran out of energy. It took a while, but eventually after weeks of exuberance at her newfound space to roam she had burned herself out. Presently she had flopped flat on her back spread eagled for all to see in the lounge.
She practically giggled at the fact that their new ship was large enough to have a lounge.
“Something funny?” Hal’s voice asked.
“Oh, just in general. So much more space. You couldn’t catch me for a week, and I have this nice plush carpet to dose on.”
“You are a bit of a speed demon when you want to be. I’m surprised boob pain didn’t force you to stop earlier. Most girls wear bras to prevent all that flopping.”
“Clothes are still dumb” The consummate nudist replied, “Decides I’m pretty used to the flopping. As should you be. I did notice your 8K cameras pointed at me as I ran, dad.”
“Can you really blame me my little starkers girl?”
Sam shrugged, “Na I guess not, I imagine you’re pretty blue balled by now though, or blue served or however that works with you.”
“Well, my wife, your mom, has helped with that. A bit. That and I have recently gotten something else to look at.” Hal said and generated a holo-display hovering just below the ceiling above Sam so she could see it from her position on the floor.
Sam blinked looking at it, it seemed to be a new survey system that Hal was looking at. Lush too so there was life. So far so interesting, but nothing earthshattering. “What’s special about this one, dad?”
The view zoomed in closer to the surface, using an ultra-long range viewfinder to get a look near enough to ground level to look around. There was a civilization on the planet. That was extra interesting, considering her dad, well the one of her dads that was biological had come from an underdeveloped planet. She blinked a little looking closer and closer and then... “Dad… are they…”
“They seem to be” The view finder panned around other locals. They all seemed vaguely vulpine, though their fur patterns weren’t the normal reds greys and white’s but brighter blues and greens and pinks. In general they looked late tribal stage. Most wore little coverings other than occasional animal skins and jewelry made of beads and bones. They did also have stonework down considering the size of their cities though hence ‘late’ tribal. They even seemed to have some sort of rudimentary trains. “I do believe that these are of the same race to the girl in the video you found. Now we can alert the government to their existence for proper contact and…”
“We should go down there!” Sam blurted.
“Excuse me? Why?”
“Dad, you know as well as I do that the government doesn’t exactly see contacting ‘primitive’ races as a priority. Especially if they aren’t about to go extinct or discover spaceflight. It could be YEARS before they do ‘proper’ contact.”
“So…”
“So… we should investigate. I mean that video wasn’t THAT old, and we don’t know if she was the last one pirates abducted. Heck they might even still be operating.”
“All the more reason to report the planet instead of going down there”
“Dad” Sam sighed, “I’m not saying NOT to report the planet. But as soon as we do the pirates are going to abandon it, right? Knowing that regular contact will come eventually they don’t want to get caught.”
“Fair enough”
“But then if it takes YEARS to really do a contact, what evidence will be left?”
Hal paused for a long moment.
“You know I’m right”
“What if its not safe?”
“Dad we all have implant augments. Medical, trackers, some self-defense. I can have a taser in my fingernails! Compared to them that makes us relatively safe, even naked!”
“…. You will of course be in a suit, and NOT naked….”
“What? I could fit in easily, just need some bead necklaces and a loincloth! Your report here already shows that the air is safe.”
“… suit…” Hal repeated.
“What, you know you want to see me dressed like them” Sam said pointed at the screen.
“… Be that as it may… Your safety is of far greater importance, my dear. That and its hard to bribe me by offering to put more clothes ON compared to your usual lack-of-dress.”
Sam groaned, “Fine… fine I’ll wear the most basic of exosuits. BUT! But you also fab up the jewelry / loincloth ensemble… as a backup.”
Hal chuckled, “Alright alright. I have to study their language and such first. Get a translation going, and all that, will take a bit.”
Hal continued to talk about the basic protocols for how they’d have to approach this. Sam was barely listening, but rather fiddling with the scanner. She knew it would take awhile to get a translation going, but hopefully they could bypass that. Whoever had kidnapped that girl might have had a translation of their own, and potentially a pirate beacon to help them with wayfinding. If it existed, then the beacon should also have the translation files.
It wouldn’t be ON of course. The pirates wouldn’t have a beacon actually transmitting, but they would have some way of turning it on. So, it had to have a dish, or antenna, or something to listen to them. Perhaps if she changed the scanner to look less for plants and rocks and stuff, and instead look for something that seemed to be absorbing radio waves then maybe… just maybe…
“Hey dad!” Sam called out, “I think I found something.”
Hal stopped his speech and switched his attention back to the scanners, processers whirring as he took in the information for a long moment. Finally he paused and his camera turned to look at his daughter again, “Oh you brilliant little pervert.”
Sam giggled, “I’ll tell the others. You get my new outfit ready.”
“I’ll prep your suit…”
“The other one too, dad.”
Hal shook his security cam as if it was a head, “Yes dear. That one too.”
