Speculative Skull Island bullshit: Geode bug
Geode bugs, or rock bugs, are one of Skull Island's most common animals that can be found close to the coast. Being amphibious isopods, they can be found both on land and in the sea, their respiratory organs being able to handle both water and air. As is common among the Skull Island fauna, they are camouflaged, using pieces of a mixture of sand, rock fragments, soil and their own hardened saliva as a cover. Unlike the spore mantis, another arthropod covered in parts of their environment, geode bugs will only cover their backs and complete their camouflage by curling up and lying motionlessly in wait for prey. In case a suitable prey item comes close, the geode bug wil rapidly unfurl and rear up, displaying the blue bioluminescent underside covered in transparent crystal shards which further enhance the bioluminescence's effects. The confusion caused by the sudden display will often enough buy the geode bug enough time to capture the prey item; in case of large, flighted insects, it often even has the effect of them flying straight at the light and into the geode bug's grasp. Defence against predators happens in the same manner, with the confusion giving them an opening to flee, although geode bugs prefer to rely on their camouflage and usually only react when an adversary is close enough to touch them. The "rock" material is usually shed with the exoskeleton and not reworked into the new layer, but the crystal shards will be meticulously plucked off the exuvia and reattached. Transparent, light-refracting materials are highly sought after to be added to the crystal shard layer, with geode bugs wandering far into the inland to specific sites where such can be found, but in recent times, glass shards have become a popular addition.
Another positive effect of the Skull Island redesigns is that it made me look more at crustacean anatomy.
Changelog:
-Renamed to "geode bugs", considering they are resembling rocks with crystals on the inside. Due to a lot of the creatures in the cartoon having very generic names or remaining unnamed, more name changes will happen
-Assigned ampisopid at birth, together with all the anatomical changes involved in it
-Made some sense out of the underside
The Disney character overlays are a measure to prevent art theft by corporations.
