Edible, and pretty!
I actually made these back in 2004 or 2003 I believe, and I need to make them again some year. They are somewhat labor intensive enough though that it's not something I'd do to often, and they unfortunately ship horribly! I shipped a couple batches to others, not a single dragon made it to anyone sadly. I've since learned new packing techniques, but even still I'd be leery to send them unless I turned them into pure ornaments... which can be done by baking them extra and then coating with a lacquer like finishing material. They'll last for quite a while and great to hang on a tree.
As for making them, well... while time consuming it's not to difficult. You'll want to get yourself a good sugar cookie recipe that is designed for cookie cutouts.
Make sure the dough is well chilled, then roll out the dough till it's thin, but not to thin, about a half inch thickness or just a touch less probably. If you make them thinner they'll almost always break if you are using a detailed cutout likes these... while I love my dragon cookie cutters, they have such small parts to them that they break very easily in the shapes.
Once you have the cookies rolled and cut, place on a baking sheet lined with either aluminum or parchment paper. "Gently" use the tip of a very sharp knife to cut out wings and points on the dragons to make holes in them.
Crush up different colors lifesavers in individual bags. Crush till small chunk, doesn't have to be fine. Use the lifesaver candy pieces in the holes you made.
Bake cookies at 350 for 8 to 10 minutes until cookies are browning just lightly and the candy has melted.
Voila, stained glass dragon cookies!
Beautiful, edible, yet fragile. Keep them sealed airtight with wax paper between layers for storage.
And my apologies on photo quality, back then I didn't have a digital camera so these are done the old way of photo, and scanned in photo after it was developed. I didn't have as good a scanner back then either. I still lived with my parents back then too!

So, after they're baked does the lifesaver bits become hard again? Because if so, that doesn't sound like a very good cookie! :(
What would be delicious, though, is maybe if somehow you could make them hollow and put a filling into them so that it comes out the holes in the wings. Like, strawberry or something? THAT would he crazy good.
Mmmm. :D

Well, yes they do become hard, but they are also thin so you can "Crunch" into it a bit... but you can cut your gum on sugar shards too! They really weren't the best eating cookie in the world, but they did look pretty! I think next batch I do I'll aim to put holes in the top and use them for ornaments.
Mmmm, a filling though...
That's difficult in cookies, though doable. Though really have to play around with ideas on it.
ACtually, doing a multi layered cookie might work! I have in my pastry book from school a way they make an ice-box cookie of sorts that has a checker board pattern. Using that, concept, I might be able to basically make two Sugar cookie doughs, and one Strawberry cookie dough, Roll out the sugar, then strawberry on it, then sugar. Do a Cut of the three, then cut out a portion from the top. Leaving the strawberry revealed? I can make that dough softer as well since it'll be supported by the bottom layer...
That's the theory, but I find that sometimes the theory doesn't work as well as the reality, hehe. Course, It might just be easiest, two layers.... Strawberry bottom, sugar top, and just cut out from the top.
I could even "Color" additionally using the egg painting dye method.

::Purrs and hugs back!:: Indeed, that would work great too! Very pretty. :) I actually do want to experiment with these someday, particularly on making a better cookie dough than what I remember they were done with, something with more flavor. Though I liked the fruity life savers back then, hehe, even if there contrasts were quite different to that of the cookie.
Glad she likes them! :)
