Apparently they were renamed to Steinblock at one point while Whomps took the Wummp title at that time, but German is fun to alliterate and rhyme with because it's vocabulary reusage and word ending rules make it almost automatic in the language. And raccoon leaves come from Mario 3 so it's early enough to call them that.
Also those beveled edges are a huge struggle to work with, even if the 64 thwomp looks simpler than others.
