A soft humming filled the space in the musty store between the sounds of clinking bottles and the rustling of herbs. Jenny - the diminutive mouse who owned the store, liked humming, Rebecca had observed. She could often be seen with a pair of headphones tucked into her pink radar dishes of ears, the headband hidden among a waterfall of glistening blue hair that fell to her shoulders and curled gently around them. For her part, Rebecca found the noise unobtrusive, soft enough to be barely audible and certainly not loud enough to interrupt the pumpkin’s own thoughts. While Jenny was humming quietly to herself and checking off items on a battered looking notepad, Rebecca was doing some light restocking. The anthropomorphic pumpkin girl had a basket of potions slung atop one arm and used the other to restock where she saw potions missing on the store’s old wooden shelves. Some of the store favourites were cures for things like joint pain or headaches which needed topping up on a weekly basis.
Rebecca straightened. While the idea of a sentient pumpkin working in a witch’s potion store might have seemed about right, it was probably her clothes which fitted her best to work with a witch. The pumpkin typically wore gothic looking attire, today was no different with a form fitting black shirt, wristbands, dress and fishnet leggings ending in black shoes. She sported a ponytail held in place by a black and white ribbon and had long brown hair, locks of which hung past her shoulders, cascading down to her chest. She fit the aesthetic in every way, including the way her eyes glowed a gentle white light. Rebecca had been working with Jenny for a few years now, she had her own room in the house that extended out behind the little storefront and found the pace and atmosphere of working with the witch to be a good fit for her. Jenny was a quiet creature who sought her own space and Rebecca did much the same, while the two came together for dinner, movie and game nights regularly. The thought of the latest game night brought a smile to Rebecca’s lips as she recalled the two of them laying on her couch munching on pretzels as they went through a horror game together. The frequency of such nights and the amount of food they ate had almost certainly contributed to the layer of softness that showed on both figures, with both Jenny and Rebecca being plump enough to push out their tight shirts into rounded bellies. She opened her mouth to ask what they should play next time when the bell at the front door rang, signalling a customer.
The person who walked into the store had to take it side-on just to get their bulk through, with their white furred gut squishing into view far before the rest of them. It took a few moments of panting and squirming but slowly but surely a vixen managed to squeeze her way into the potion store, prompting Jenny to apparently remember something and dash for the back rooms. This left the vixen - panting and using a nearby shelf to help hold herself up, and Rebecca alone. The girl was massive, with a great sweat streaked stomach that her purple shirt failed to halfway encompass folding down atop bloated, pillowy thighs. Every part of her seemed to have gained weight but she certainly seemed to gain it primarily in her stomach which she clutched with one paw as though to settle. She too had striking blue hair, though it was much more light than Jenny’s, almost cyan. And judging by the complicated crystalline looking bracelets that she wore the vixen was either a fellow witch, or magic adjacent. She must have caught Rebecca staring - it wouldn’t have been difficult, because she offered a weak smile and drew in the breath required for an introduction.
“Hi! I’m Genevieve. I’m a friend of Jenny’s, we learned magic together.” A sweaty, fluffy white paw was offered in greeting which Rebecca took without hesitation.
“Rebecca!” The girl replied with a grin. “Have you come by before?”
Genevieve blushed, though it was hard to tell given the shade of red her muzzle had been simply from the exertion of movement. “Uh, not recently. I’ve been a little hmm... busy I suppose. Though I stopped by the other day to drop off-”
The vixen stopped as Jenny appeared from the door to the back of the house holding what at first seemed like a large white sheet. She smiled as she saw Genevieve. “All cleaned, as requested. You needn't have come all this way yourself, I’d gladly have taken it to you.” By the way she looked at Genevieve it was clear that the mouse and the vixen had some history. There was a way old friends looked at one another, soaking in every detail about the other, that gave it away. With her furless, pink mouse hands, Jenny unfurled the sheet to reveal it was in fact a shirt. Written in large black letters across the shirt were the words: Two large double cheese burger meals, one large onion rings, one large fish sandwich.
Rebecca scanned the words quickly and laughed. “Amazing!” She exclaimed, grinning ear to ear. “Is that like, a prank shirt? Like you’ve got to be this big to wear a shirt with an order like that on it?” The pumpkin gestured broadly with her arms before Genevieve cleared her throat.
“Actually it’s mine.” Genevieve replied, blushing a little more. Rebecca blushed too now, mortified that she might have made a customer feel upset, let alone an old friend of Jenny’s. “I got some er- stains on it that refused to come out the conventional way. Jenny’s alchemy is a bit more stable than mine so I thought I’d ask her for help.”
“It wasn’t a problem,” Jenny replied warmly and stepped past Rebecca to hand the shirt to Genevieve. “And Rebecca didn’t mean anything by it.”
“Not at all!” Rebecca was quick to add, “I really like the shirt! Maybe I’ll buy one of my own.” She realised she’d said it to help release some of the tension that had built up in the air, but the words brought a smile to Genevieve’s muzzle all the same.
“Well, you can get them from the Burgers Burgers website,” Genevieve replied, folding the shirt in her arms, “but be careful, you might be like me and come to enjoy the convenience of having your order on your shirt a little too much.” She winked before turning to start the sweaty process of pushing herself back out the front door, a process which took a little under ten seconds before the door closed behind her.
Jenny, who had returned to her clipboard behind the counter, was looking at Rebecca with a smirk across her face.
“What?” The pumpkin asked.
“Nothing.” Jenny replied, before laughing.
. . .
The potion store was usually a quiet little place. Jenny said that was one of the things that had attracted her to it in the first place. A quiet little place with a quiet little store on a quiet little street. Although Rebecca didn’t really think ‘little’ was an adequate word to describe it. With the storefront facing the public, there was an entire house behind it, with two bedrooms, a kitchen and living room as well as a basement and attic. Jenny said that potions had to be brewed in a basement or attic, if either were available. Not as a matter of fact, but a matter of preference to the potions themselves, which needed to feel sufficiently appreciated. The meaning of that was not quite something Rebecca understood, after all it seemed hard to gauge just how appreciated any inanimate object was on any given day, but as a sentient pumpkin girl she figured stranger things were possible. And it didn’t really matter, not so long as everyone had their own space. Potions included.
Rebecca’s space was a medium sized bedroom on the first floor. She had everything she could need, everything she really wanted - as far as furniture was concerned at least. The girl had a wardrobe bustling with cute outfits that conformed nicely to her curves, an old couch which creaked when she sat down or got up, as well as a desk chair for her computer and a bean bag. Long dark curtains kept the room in pleasant shade for most of the day and orange and purple fairy lights bathed it in comforting colours during the night. She was just relaxing on her couch when Jenny knocked at the open door. Rebecca paused her game of Dwarves Rocks Galactica and waved Jenny on in.
“Just got this in the mail,” the mouse said, underhanding a package in Rebecca’s direction.
The pumpkin girl caught the package out of the air and unwrapped it, laughing at the sight of her new shirt. 1 Big Cheeseburger Meal with Fries. Rebecca pulled the shirt over her torso, obscuring the black top she was already wearing. It clung to her frame tightly, showing off her generously doughy middle and the white fabric seemed to make it stand out if anything. Not that she nor Jenny seemed to mind. She had ordered the shirt directly from Burgers Burgers a week ago after her encounter with Genevieve, inputting her typical order to be printed across it. She didn’t really go to Burgers Burgers much, but perhaps that would change. The order stood out perfectly, printed in large black text across her chest and stomach. Apparently the burger chain was only too happy to print custom shirts for clients orders.
“Well,” Rebecca said, rising off of the couch, “I s’pose I’d better try it out!”
“If you’re going to Burgers, could you grab something for me too?” Jenny smiled and turned to leave the room, giving Rebecca time to take off her shirt so she could change properly.
“No problem!”
...
It was a point of trivia that Burgers Burgers was owned by a witch, or wizard, Rebecca didn’t particularly remember which. It was the kind of fact that seemed dubious at a glance but probably true, like the fact that most maps were not in fact an accurate representation of the world. That kind of thing. The chain restaurant itself seemed mostly inoffensive. Almost purposefully so. It was Another Burger Joint. The kind of place you could find in any town or city. If you’ve been to one franchised, overly corporate burger joint you’ve been to all of them and Burgers Burgers didn’t really stand out in that regard. The exterior was a loud affair with a giant sign proclaiming ‘Burgers Burgers!’ and that it was open all day. The store itself was about a ten minute walk from home, which was nice since Rebecca enjoyed walking through the neighbourhood, especially on sunny days. After ten minutes though, Rebecca was about done soaking up the sun and ready to be inside.
The front door of Burgers Burgers slid open, double wide, to reveal more or less predictable chain restaurant decor. There were the cushioned booths, the barstools and tabled area, as well as the order counter. Everything was done in beiges, reds, whites and blues but, Rebecca noted, where usually she felt a kind of indifference to this type of decor, here at least it almost seemed to feel homely. There was a casual feel about it that she couldn’t put her finger on. Like the air was at just the right temperature and the cushions in the booths looked extra cosy. By the time Rebecca made it to the counter to order her meal, she wasn’t at all embarrassed to be wearing her order across her shirt.
Behind the counter ahead of Rebecca was a familiar face. Lizzy, one of Rebecca’s oldest and dearest friends, was squeezed into a corporate Burgers Burgers uniform, grinning at the sight of Rebecca’s shirt.
“Didn’t take you for a convert!” Lizzy said, her grin widening. Lizzy was a green scaled kobold who was taller than most people. She was also, though this was somewhat more recent, quite fat. She bulged out of her uniform, stomach showing through the gap between her shirt and her pants.
“I thought I’d see what all the fuss was about.” Rebecca knew Lizzy was working for Burgers Burgers but hadn’t been in to visit her yet. She gestured towards her shirt. “I suppose you know the drill?”
“Definitely do!” Lizzy replied before putting in the order with a grin.
Rebecca made it home, with her order in hand, before she realised that she’d forgotten to get something for Jenny. The pumpkin looked down for a moment at the meal she hadn’t eaten before sighing and deciding to make the walk back to the restaurant. After ordering something for Jenny, she would probably order another something for herself there. After all, what they didn’t eat, they could always put in the fridge for later.
Nothing made it to the fridge for later.
...
Crunch
It had been about a week since Rebecca’s first order at Burgers Burgers. Now, mixed with Jenny’s gentle humming, could be heard the occasional bite of french fries and onion rings. Small things, easy to nibble on while stocking shelves. Rebecca herself seemed to struggle at the task a little more than she had been, particularly in places where she had to bend over to put the new potions on the shelf. And alongside her potions in the basket was an order from Burgers Burgers which she crunched on between stocking items.
The pumpkin girl had certainly grown since last week, using the shelves to ease herself up, her stomach had ballooned to the size of a belly that can usually only be seen on the heavily pregnant. This one was certified fat though, soft, doughy and with the slightest hint of a fold in the middle. Far from hungry, every chip that made its way in that doughy balloon of a stomach seemed to bloat it out just a little more, and every bite seemed to make it feel just a little more firm. Crumbs littered her front, spilling down her shirt which now only half covered her gut and clung to her like it might just tear as she slowly eased herself into a standing position and, panting lightly, waddled across the room to stock another shelf.
Jenny watched with apparent curiosity. “You’ll have to buy a new shirt soon,” the mouse remarked with a chuckle, marking another item off her list with a quill. She hadn’t been immune to the weight gain which apparently had effected the entire house - her witches garb, something she wore to appease local curiosity, now wrapped tight across her frame. The purple robe left nothing to the imagination as it revealed a chubby stomach that had ballooned into a small pot belly. It didn’t come near to Rebecca’s size, but she’d certainly gained weight.
The pumpkin girl considered Jenny’s statement as she stopped to catch her breath. At least the hair removal salves were in the middle of the shelf, which meant she didn't have to bend down so far to restock them. “Yeah,” Rebecca replied, popping another chip in her mouth, “I suppose I will.”
...
Huff. Pant. Huff.
It had been another week. Another week of helping to make and stock potions. Another week of Burgers Burgers orders. Rebecca has had an insatiable appetite for the delicious burgers, and it showed. Where once she could be called merely chubby, now Rebecca was at least twice the size she’d been before her journey into Burgers Burgers began. Having ballooned into a massively obese parody of her former self, the girl’s stomach alone could now easily contain the contents of her entire fridge. It hung down her thighs in an ever gradual approach to her knees and pushed out feet in front of her, hungry and demanding. Her hips had widened to the point where she felt them brush against the sides of doors. They tapered down to ham hocks of legs which had destroyed most of her fishnet leggings. Her arms had grown to the point where restocking was becoming an untenable chore and even her cheeks had puffed up. Thankfully she had the money to replace her wardrobe as nothing Rebecca owned before had a chance of fitting her now. But that seemed the least pressing matter, not compared to the current, mammoth task of walking to Burgers Burgers.
What had started as a ten minute walk now took roughly thirty as the pumpkin girl waddled, panted and huffed her way down the sidewalk, shifting her eyes from the stares of other people around her. They looked at her with a mixture of pity, seeing the order across her sweat soaked shirt, and second hand embarrassment. Rebecca tried not to take notice, instead she kept her eyes forward, locked on her destination, the brightly glowing Burgers Burgers sign ahead. Her shirt now read Slider and Corndog family meal, 2 Big Cheeseburgers, 3 Medium Cheeseburgers with Fries. There were patches around the arms where Jenny had sown over split seams.
It took the whole thirty minutes, but Rebecca thanked her lucky stars that the restaurant was as close as it was as she finally made it to Burgers Burgers. She gasped for breath, each one coming and leaving just a little too quickly. The massive pumpkin girl finally worked up the energy to wheeze her way through the double doors and into the bliss of the air conditioned interior. She sighed happily. Somehow, as the doors closed behind her, she felt a little bit lighter. Not quite a surge of energy but certainly a little bit of a second wind fell over her as she straightened and made her way to the front counter. The judging gazes of folk were outside now, nobody in Burgers Burgers seemed to look twice at her, and that was just the way Rebecca liked it. It didn’t hurt that there was soon to be an order of Burgers Burgers in the girl’s hands and that was enough to brighten her mood any day.
This time, as the trend has become lately, Rebecca decided she would order and eat in the restaurant, rather than attempting the perilously exhausting walk home with her meal. The corporate decor had finally started to win her over and even if she wouldn’t admit it to anyone else, she kind of liked the red cushioned booths, the black and white tiles and the weirdly out of place polished wooden panels. There was something about the place, the gentle brush of perfectly air conditioned air or the light smell of grilled patties that just felt right. It certainly set her at ease a lot more than it had a few weeks ago. She could see another Rebecca, perhaps a more shameless Rebecca, redoing the decor of her room in a similar style.
In another life.
Maybe when she lived alone so no one could see it.
With a little more energy than she’d had a few minutes ago, Rebecca waddled up to the counter. Lizzy was working again today - Rebecca tried to visit on days Lizzy was working, it was nice to see the kobold in her element. And there was a lot of kobold to see! If Jenny had gained weight in the past few weeks it was nothing compared to Lizzy, who had had a head start on Rebecca. The kobold was a massive pile of blubbery folds. Barely mobile and bursting out of her uniform, Lizzy was still cheerfully taking orders between tables and delivering food. Her stomach dragged across the ground as she walked and her hips would have flat out demolished most doorways but she seemed neither to care, or maybe even realise just how big she had gotten.
“Usual order?” The kobold asked on Rebecca’s approach, her voice slightly muffled from the ring of fat that her neck had become.
“Sounds good, I’ll just be over there.” Rebecca replied with a grin, motioning to a nearby booth that was free.
“Coming right up!”
Rebecca turned from the kobold to start her journey to the booth. Any distance walked these days, great or small, had indeed become a journey. It was a part of having thighs as massively wide as she did - every step became a wide, circular thing as one leg had to both navigate the mass of the other leg and push against the rolling, sloshing tide of her stomach. It turned the five second walk across the restaurant floor into a thirty second waddle. And then there was the booth itself, thankfully wide enough to accommodate her girth, she still had to slowly turn around and then use the side of the booth to gently lower herself into it. The table squished against her stomach as she turned to face the middle of the booth, but it was far enough away that she could almost comfortably squeeze in there. Certainly more comfortable than other chain restaurants had been in the past.
Sitting at the booth Rebecca had a little time to reflect on her state - the way her body felt covered in sweat, the way her chest hurt with all her heaving panting. She had always been a little chubby, this was simply an extension of that. Nothing a little exercise wouldn’t cure, and she was certainly getting lots of that with her regular trips to Burgers Burgers.
Another person’s huffing and panting caught Rebecca’s attention in time for her to see Lizzy drop off her meals on two large plastic platters. Three large meals and three mediums, enough fries and drink to feed a family and change.
“Enjoy your meal!” The kobold said, took a moment to catch her breath, then started the long waddle back to the kitchen.
“Thanks!” Rebecca called back, before sizing up the meal in front of her. Burgers Burgers was known for its generous portions and they certainly outdid themselves with the meal that now sat before her. Five sets of fries sat steaming, thick logs of potato sweating salt and grease into their cardboard containers. The scent of the burgers was mouthwatering as it was familiar - it was what had hooked Rebecca on their meals in the first place, after all. And in the afternoon sun which streamed through the large windows by her booth the corndog practically glistened beside tubs of sauces. Anyone else might have taken a day to eat all of this, but not Rebecca. Not anymore.
First she went after the fries, they were always the first to start tasting stale after all. Fresh, Burgers Burgers were amazing, but even stale they held up to the competition. Rebecca wasn’t going to let them get that far though. Handful after handful the pumpkin girl shovelled them into her mouth at breakneck pace, barely giving herself enough time to chew and swallow before the next set came down. A few orders of fries were demolished in a matter of minutes and Rebecca quenched her thirst by drinking one of the large drinks of soda she’d bought, gulping it all down in one long, drawn out set of swallows. Rebecca’s stomach was never truly empty - its prodigious size made it so that she was almost always snacking these days, so as she followed the soda up with one of the massive burgers she began to feel it bloat, what was now a familiar sensation. Bite by bite, gulp by gulp, her stomach stretched out, pushed out the warm doughy blubber that layered onto it and ballooned. Already squeezed into the booth, the booth’s table now neatly cut into her gut, allowing the top of it to balloon with food while the bottom remained pressed, sandwiched between the table and the cushions beneath. Her thighs had been pushed apart so that her stomach could sit firmly between them. Inch after inch the pumpkin’s stomach grew, rounder, bigger, pushing ever outwards. Her shirt started to ride up the bottom of it. Cool air reached the underside of her gut, a soothing sensation as she crammed the last morsels into her mouth.
Riiiiip.
Yet more cool air poured into a newly made tear on Rebecca’s side where her love handle had proven more than the shirt could take. It split neatly, revealing an oval of pumpkin coloured blubber. Sighing, full to capacity and drumming a hand contently on her stomach, Rebecca shrugged. At least it didn’t obscure her order.
...
Time passed in that gentle way it does when one has nothing particularly pressing to do, as was the case for those who worked in Jenny’s potion store. There were the occasional emergencies and occurrences, but for a few months it seemed, there was nothing but Burgers Burgers. On a cool wednesday afternoon, with the leaves outside turning red for autumn, Jenny stocked the shelves in the front of her store. Her dental hygiene potion had been in particularly high demand, likely on account of halloween having just passed, and she was down to one vial on the shelf. A handful more rattled in her basket as she placed them down, one by one. She was heavier than she had been a few months ago. Gone was the chubby but still relatively thin mouse with a pot belly, replaced by a woman who was used to food and used to eating. She had a large, round barrel of a belly which stuck out in front of her - an obstacle when it came to leaning down and stocking potions. The rest of her had plumped up too, but nowhere near her stomach, a veritable cauldron of a gut. Stretching the creaks out of her back, Jenny realised how Rebecca must have felt those many weeks ago when she was getting used to her own weight gain.
The bell above the store’s front door jingled pleasantly as a wall of white shirt and pumpkin flesh struggled to squeeze itself through. The feat took more than a few seconds as Rebecca pushed and kneaded at the blubber of her stomach like it was a pillow she was trying to push into a case. She huffed and groaned - this was why she didn’t leave the store much anymore, doors were way too narrow. It didn’t help that piled in her arms were several orders from Burgers Burgers, provoking a perilous act of juggling to try and keep them from spilling over while she pushed and kneaded to get herself through the front door. Jenny was less than helpful, the mouse seemed to be in awe as Rebecca finally managed to get enough of her through the door that through sheer momentum the rest of her ‘popped’ through and left her stumbling to regain her balance.
Rebecca was huge. Even if she herself had yet to acknowledge it herself. She was bigger than Genevieve had been all those months ago, a massive balloon of a girl who’s gut hung well past her knees now, scant inches above the floor. Her breasts had swollen to the point where not only had she had to purchase all new clothes, but they were so large they threatened to obscure her massive gut beneath them. The pumpkin’s hips had grown, pushing outwards until single doors like the one in front of the store were an incredible challenge to say the least, provoking the pumpkin to take everything side on despite the sheer amount her gut stuck out in front of her. At least her gut could be smooshed and kneaded into place where it required, her mammoth hips seemed like they would destroy anything that got in her way. Her neck was no longer a recess, but simply another roll of fat to jostle and wobble with her every motion and right now her entire body wobbled as she stood there struggling to gain her breath. Sweat dropped seemingly from every part of her and was already dripping onto the wooden floor of the store. The pumpkin girl’s shirt now read: Slider and corndog family meal, 2 Big Cheeseburgers, 3 Medium Cheeseburgers with fries. 2 Packs of Mozzarella sticks, Onion Rings, and Mac and Cheese all of the meals with Bepsis and 3 Milkshakes, Vanilla, Chocolate, and Strawberry as dessert. The massive order had proven too big for Burgers Burgers biggest shirts for sale, but with a little clever patching and sewing Jenny had been able to sew on additional segments for additional food as the order itself grew alongside Rebecca.
Jenny, who must have realised she had been staring, shook her head slightly in amazement. She hadn’t really taken the time to properly look at Rebecca lately - if the pumpkin kept this up, Jenny wasn’t sure she’d be able to walk soon. Seeing the bags of takeout in her arms she smiled, whatever happened, Rebecca would enjoy every moment of it. “You’d better take those bags to your room, your friends are waiting for you.” The mouse said, putting her empty basket down and waddling over to her counter.
Rebecca stood panting for a few moments, trying to work up the breath she needed to answer, before eventually giving Jenny a thumbs up and starting the lumbering walk to her room. She was on the home stretch, thankfully, and could hear the sound of her couch calling to her tired legs. The hallway was too narrow - she had told Jenny it was too narrow but the mouse had blinked and told her there was nothing she could do about it. Rebecca’s love handles squeezed in against either side of the wall, leaving trails of sweat behind her and adding to her difficulties in walking. The floorboards beneath her creaked with every step of the way and she was already out of breath again but her room was thankfully just ahead.
Like Jenny said, her friends were all in her room waiting for her. Lizzy hadn’t gained too much more weight, remaining mobile if barely so, she squished the beanbag chair beneath her to the point Rebecca was surprised it hadn’t burst. Verv, her plump bee friend, was settled comfortably into her computer chair, leaving Rebecca the couch all for herself. It was for the best, Rebecca needed the couch for herself these days. She simply couldn’t fit with anyone else sitting there.
“You’re back!” Verv exclaimed, smiling.
“And with the food!” Added Lizzy, her stomach rumbling loudly.
Rebecca grinned but she couldn’t reply for all the panting and huffing she was doing. Not yet. She waddled slowly over to the couch and plopped herself down - the unceremonious descent causing her couch to finally give up the ghost. The feet of the couch crumbled into its frame at the same time as the back snapped off, coming to rest against the wall behind her. Rebecca was still comfortably settled into its remains, if not shocked to feel it suddenly give out beneath her. Lizzy laughed outright, while Verv’s smile spread to a grin.
“Well that was bound to happen sooner or later!” The bee chuckled.
“Yeah, that old thing was always going to go. Folk like us have to shop for sturdy furniture.” Lizzy added with a pat to her stomach.
Folk like us. Folk like us. Rebecca hadn’t considered herself overly fat, not really. But maybe she had put on a little weight. And who wouldn’t? When such good burgers were just down the road.
“Yeah,” she replied with a smile, finally having caught her breath. “Folk like us.” Rebecca distributed the food in the meals and the three of them settled in together in front of the tv, turning it on to watch a movie together.
