It's... worse than that, actually. =D I messed around with SW EU canon a bit. Basically she was a Jedi taken captive by a pair of Sith. As part of her interrogation, they drugged her with stuff that messed with her sensory perceptions, and then carved Sith runes in her flesh. The runes were allowed to scar. They handed her over to the Emperor's Hand when she was close to breaking, before the scars had fully healed. He painted the scars with poisonous ink made from the shells of orbalisk beetles that had been crushed and ground to powder. In addition to causing her unbelievable pain, the ink bonded with her skin and the fur follicles at a near-atomic level. Even after her scars healed, the fur over them grows in black.
