Chapter 21 - Clash of the Hoofbuns
<<< PREV | FIRST | NEXT >>>
This chapter makes me think of the opening to "ZHP Unlosing Ranger vs Darkdeath Evilman", which starts off with the narrator saying:
"This game has only one battle sequence. Thank you for your understanding.
However, it will be one huge, epic battle. Thank you for your understanding."
RH-01 and Flopsy finally meet in person! And it goes about as well as you can expect. When two super-strong, super-tough fighters go at each other, well... I'd hate to be the one who has to foot the bill for all those repairs! Think the insurance company will cover it? How would you even classify this on a claims form?
I tried to keep the combat flowing and keep it interesting, as well as getting to show both their similarities and their differences. For instance, RH-01 did receive combat training, but she didn't pay close attention to it since her brute strength carried her through everything, so she fights with a mix of fist-based brawling and wild swings. Meanwhile, Flopsy was trained by people who leaned into her natural strengths, so she focused on kicks, and that was only enhanced by her martial arts training with Sensei. RH-01 fights on raw instinct and ferocity, Flopsy calculates and plans her strikes because she's so used to having to hold back.
Oh man, this fight. I started with "choreography notes" to plan out the fight, and those notes fill an entire page. And then a diagram whipped up in MS Paint of the floor layout. It's a long hallway with about six apartments on either side, with an elevator on one end and a window that leads to the fire escape on the other. It took a lot of energy to plot everything and figure everything out and try to "act out" the scene in my head. But it was a lot of fun. ^_^
Did I do a good job? Were things confusing? Were you able to picture the scene? Let me know what you think!

this was an epic chapter!!! im personally very bad at followin environmental-traversal in writing that i read, so i mostly just felt "ok theyre mostly in a hallway and pennys apartment, but the fight is also pushin into other apartments and the window and the elevator, wherever those are". either way it was a cool chapter. im startin to think RH was kind of abused into her situation by the secret program, and isnt herself purely evil. so mayb if some kind of miracle happens and RH is separated from the secret program, she could be buddies with flopsy and ben? mayb?
I tried to have it "flow", as the fight progressed. It started in Penny's apartment, then Flopsy and RH-01 spilled out into the hallway as Ben and Anna arrived from the elevator. During the fight, Flopsy got thrown out the window, and had to deal with the van of mercenaries in the back parking lot. Meanwhile, the view cut back to the hallway, with RH-01 as a "viewpoint" character, so the narration got to show some of her thoughts. During the fight, her head got sent through a wall and spooked a guy, but then she pulled back out quickly.
The building is laid out kinda like a hotel, but just short segments that are stacked. One central hallway runs the length of the building, one end having the elevator, the other end having a large window that opens to a fire escape. On either side of the hallway are apartments, about six on each side. Penny was in the last apartment, closest to the window. The apartments themselves are pretty small, consisting of a main living room, a small kitchen, a bedroom, and a bathroom tucked inside the bedroom. Penny's is a bit of a disorganized mess, but she knows where everything is, so she doesn't care. (And there's not food garbage or anything that'll attract bugs, even though bugs are much less of an issue when you're not on the ground floor. Still, she doesn't want "dirty", she's just okay with "cluttered".)
