Like any other phoenix, Calcific Phoenixes are creatures borne of an ever burning flame. Unlike others however, these are subsequently bound to carved skulls. Mostly created by mages and sorcerers as familiar, they're also a common sight in arid regions where fire elementals are similarly common. The skull itself acts as a secondary layer for their resurrection in the event of death. So long as the skull remains intact or a sufficient pile of ashes remain, the phoenix will rise again.

While those made as familiars have a more uniform appearance, wild have a degree of variance based on the species their skull comes from, and the chemicals in the immediate area. Regardless of origin, any two calcific phoenixes can pair to create a new phoenix by taking shards from their own skulls and combining them with sparks from their united flames.

When it comes to being familiars, Calcific phoenixes provide a strong focus for those wishing to channel fire magics, and even greater magnitudes for fire sorceries specifically. As a byproduct, they also provide a steady supply of alchemical ash to those wishing to dabble in alchemy, or need a steady supply of money. Due to the cost of the materials alone, and materials needed to maintain them, it is ill advised to create a calcific phoenix purely for this ash.

This particular subject is known as Aeval, the eternal familiar of Uphiti's court wizard. Unlike other familiars, Aeval isn't bound to a specific person. Instead, they are bound to the position, serving to relay knowledge from previous court wizards to the next in line.
