I think Zonai possibly had different features across different individuals (like Zora or Rito) and the ancient hero's lineage was leonine, with him being a hylian/zonai hybrid. And yes he can breathe fire - there are no felines in TOTK besides lynels so I think TOTK felines breathe fire.
