What an excellent idea. Might have to scour some charity shops to see if I can get enough of similar design and colour to make a tunic with now I've seen this.

I once made a small top like this, but this is long enough to be a dress! With a few more ties sewn at the bottom, it'd be perfect. ^^

I think I'll buy only wide ties, so they flare a lot at the bottom, that might take care of it, but yeah, I want a long hem at the bottom :)

The color mishmash is actually really nice.

Yes, in some places it is, but in others it looks bleh. I also think if they were MORE distinct it could work better, right now most are grayish or red, with a few off ones. But there generally isn't enough of them, and some of them are of this really dull woolly fabric, I'd rather keep it all in glossy satins. And have a fairly matching quality throughout.

You might have to experiment with that. My gut says that it would look good if all the ties were in the same dominant color family but had different patterns and textures, but that could make the whole thing unruly. Having some kind of alternation would really show off the weave in it...

If you could afford it or find enough of them, silk ties would probably be nice. They usually aren't always satin but they're sturdy and have a nice textured smooth feel to them over the more common cotton ties.

I basically went and got a bunch of relatively conservative ties. Most of them are striped or in paisley pattern. One of them has a nice crest embroidery I will have to place right. Apart from dark blues all the colours are pretty muted. All of them are second hand ... some stores want a high price but others sell them for the unwanted stuff they are, so 1-3 USD per piece.

Yeah, it probably would have been a bit much to buy a bunch of brand-new ties. It can cost a lot, and there's a charm in re-using old stuff, so win-win on the second-hand thing.
