“I blame you for this,” Alys al-Sakai fairly snarled at ‘M.’ “If Vladmir comes to any harm over this, I swear I’ll – “
The roebuck raised a paw. “Spare me the threats, my Lady. I know that you have already directed certain operatives in your employ to see to it that I will not survive long after your son’s heart stops beating.” He gave the leopardess a thin, mirthless smile. “I knew that he might use the information I gave him, but he revealed it far too soon.”
Vladmir had addressed the assembled legislators and Ministers earlier in the day, letting them know that he wished to ‘fix’ the various environmental woes that had plagued Terra for centuries. The applause was polite, but it was easy to see the condescending smirks on many of the furs.
How the youngster would react when he discovered that his orders weren’t going to be obeyed – not even considered, in fact – had given ‘M’ a few moments of thought.
He would have to order his staff to update their lists.
An instant of datatrance, so swift that the leopardess never caught it, and it was done.
“But, the fact remains that he has,” ‘M’ said, “so we must consider next steps.” He glanced up at the Regent. “I have already given orders to increase the watch on the likeliest sources of danger. The next step is yours.”
“Mine?”
He leaned in close and whispered, “You should speak with your friends, Vicar.” Her eyes widened and he said in a more conversational tone, “Will you be escorting His Majesty back to Maratha?”
If he had startled her, she didn’t show it. “Yes, tomorrow.”
“Good. I wish you a safe journey.” The roebuck in Vice-Admiral’s uniform sketched a bow. “My Lady.” Without waiting, he turned and walked away, his hooves clacking against the tiled floor.
Alys al-Sakai watched him go, feeling her claws twitching, before pivoting and walking away to join her sons and make sure they got back to the Palace safely.
Once they were in bed and asleep, she would call the leaders of the Order together, and talk things through.
