Sha'ira always loved her grandmother but the old woman was always an odd one. The signs where never dangerous but they where obvious as Grandmother often told stories about things that never happened, places she had never been and people she had never met. Most of the family simply accepted this as a mind becoming muddled with age and when Grandmother vanished one day, they assumed she had simply wandered off. However, despite searching for the better part of a year no trace of the old woman was ever found. It was almost as if she had simply evaporated into thin air. In time Grandmother's earthly possessions where divided amongst the rest of the family. Being the unremarkable if bright grandchild she was, all Sha'ira got was Grandmother's old cookbook and her favorite wooden spoon.
While paging through it, one night, Sha'ira noticed something strange. Whenever she wasn't looking the words and pictures on the page seemed to slowly rearrange themselves into an array of strange glyphs, symbols and writing she couldn't read but instinctively recognized as the language of magic. This wasn't a cookbook but a spellbook. Grandmother was a mage. The spoon, anticlimactically, was just a spoon.
After months of trial and error Sha'ira was able to decode enough of the book to cast her first cantrap. Thrilling as this achievement was, however, she still found herself overwhelmed with questions. So she signed up with the first group of adventurers that would accept her and set out in pursuit of answers. Should she find fortune and glory along the way, so much the better.
