As a southerner, I can confirm they try to serve grits anytime you order breakfast items at a diner. And I dont care for them myself. Boiled corn meal is just a filler.

Most definitely don't forget the butter, although some people put redeye gravy on them but I can't stand coffee so I never could enjoy redeye gravy.

While I consider grits a breakfast staple, I've never considered them as a cereal. That's what corn flakes are for. LOL.

LOL. Not quite. Grits are coarse ground dried corn kernels. They aren't as finely ground as corn meal and normally they're made from white corn instead of yellow corn.

As a canadian, it doesn't seem appealling at all. It must be cheap if they push it in every breakfast meal order.

Well, dried corn is rather cheap, and taking it to a gristmill isn't expensive either. Southerners have been eating grits since the 1860s when food was scarce and corn was cheap and easy to grow. Now, you want to know what I find difficult to believe anyone eats? Cream of wheat. To me, that stuff just looks inedible. LOL.
