They silence your voice with a single bite.
They shroud you in darkness and extinguish your light.
But don't be scared, and don't you fret.
They're only hiding you from the bigger threat.
Here's a creature I came up with for a homebrew D&D campaign!
The idea is that these things will try to silence the players in a pitch-black forest and extinguish any light that they see to keep them blind and in the dark. They're called Ventriloquents because they steal the players' voice to speak. If a player talks, they take psychic damage and the voice is projected from the Ventriloquent. It will tell the players to "follow the sound of the river" to leave. The creatures may seem creepy or evil, but really, they just want the players to leave so that the bigger monster doesn't find them. Just be sure to credit me!

AC: 12
HP: 15
Speed: 40 ft, 40 ft climbing speed.
STR: 8
DEX: 18
CON: 10
INT: 6
WIS: 16
CHA: 14
Skills: Acrobatics +4, Perception +4
Senses: Darkvision 120 feet, hearing 200 feet
Languages: And language the Ventriloquent is able to hear.
Ventriloquist
The Ventriloquent possesses the supernatural ability to steal the voice of nearby creatures. While within 60 feet of a Ventriloquent , if a creature speaks in a proficient language, the creature takes 1 point of psychic damage for each word spoken and the origin of the speech changes to that of the observer.
Lock-On Senses
The Ventriloquent has advantage on creatures that can't see it and advantage on creatures while in magical darkness.
Silent Predator
While not using its Ventriliquist ability, the Ventriloquent is under the effect of Silence and cannot make any sound within a 1 foot radius around itself.
Silencing Bite
Melee Weapon Attack:+7, Reach 5 ft., One Target
Hit: 11 (2d6+4) piercing damage
The target makes a Charisma saving through, DC 16. On a failure, The target is silenced until the end of their next turn. On a success, the creature is not silenced.
Darkness (Recharge 5-6)
Cast Darkness as an action.
