I feel so sorry for them. Fred is stuck in a hell all his life and Kathy is getting pulled into an inferno that she has little chance of doing any good. Even if she does become the empress the whole system is set up to tear itself apart with just a small spark. Please don't take this as a negative review or your hard work, but why give up her life where she was free to choice her way to choosing to be nothing but a pawn in a game that has no winners?
I can respect those reasons. It seems odd only in that while that is the land of her ancestry, is she not a citizen of your world's equivalent of the United States from "New Yak" city? Is she not a citizen of an entirely different country with no binding allegiance before she chose to enter this game? I respect her ideals and morals, it is merely the application that left me wondering why.
The way I imagine it, each species has its own "nation" if you will, which coexist. In America there are general laws (like you don't hunt your neighbors). Kathy's birthright is to be Heir of Rackenroon, and she can't turn that down without offending her clan.
Fred also made it clear to her that if Songween dies without an Heir, war will break out as her relatives vie for the throne; and Kathy's two cousins, Jinjur and Vyschuss, are not fit to rule. Their clans would declare war on each other if either one were to be selected as Heir. So Kathy is "the tiebreaker" so to say.
If the peace and stability of the world depended on you doing something onerous, but necessary, wouldn't you do it?

I don't want to have this taken as an argument, but as a respectful answer. In this particular circumstances I would remember the sacrifices made to escape the nightmare of the old world and that I am not bound by oath or loyalty to their system. My loyalty, honor, and willingness to sacrifice is true, but my nation is the United States of America. What you have is not peace, not even close, to quote Darth Vader from the fic "Darth Vader Hero of Naboo" "What you have is quiet." And that those who would involve themselves in that conflict better pray they don't involve my nation as their enemy.
Erf, I know where he's coming from. There's a reason it's called trauma. In his case...it's PTSD his entire life.
I'm still coping my self with my own from Iraq, while I don't know his fear. I know his pain. I suggest, he look at the "ball" for Piga-Paka.
Will it scare him? Oh absolutely. There's a reason though. It's a head. A symbol of his fear, and one thing I know about fear? It can turn to hate and rage so easily.
He's trained. If he can channel his fear into rage. His training will channel that rage into action. He'll face and gut his demons every time he sees one
Feels so odd, encouraging this. Specially since I've several lion friends. And being a fellow feline. Still...none of my friends have any wants/desires to assassinate political anything, or
regicide

I repeat, firearms training, stat. With nothing but attacking lion targets. The sooner they develop the reflex that the only proper riposte to lions attacking is the Mozambique Drill (and I use the obsolete term advisedly), the better.
