The Artist and the Fox - The Great Holiday Story Exchange
So... holding myself in reserve should there be an odd number of story exchangers, I found myself alone, but smiling none the less. We have such a number of writers who decided to do this one, it truly has delighted me. (we are all writers together)
Never fear... I decided to choose a new friend to create my story for.
CalicoNeko90
In the way things happen, mostly by chance, I saw some Christmas ornaments Calico has been making and found her to be a unique artist who is so very talented. I am amazed at the images created by actually burning the wood she uses. Not only that, but she is a most delightful person.
*holds the story out in both paws... thank you Neko for helping my mind to wander just a bit. Merry Christmas!

"That’s how people did it back then…
by reading a book, and letting their imagination run away with the printed words."
It's not entirely a lost art ;)
"my handwriting is barely readable"
You and me both, maybe it's a fox thing!

Great typewriter! Got me through high school and college.

A lovely little tale. I love just letting my mind wander into the realm of dreams. A lot of my stories and characters initially came from such moments. Usually daydreams as I walk though the woods surrounding my place or especially during long isolated periods of travel. No one around, but me and my thoughts as I unplug from the world.
I do wish my nighttime dreams were more like this though. They usually end up being too odd or related to some stress in my daily life. Assuming I recall them at all. Though I did have a rather sensual one regarding my cheetox, Kira, just a few weeks back. It was a nice change of pace.

Wow, I liked it very much! Really an amazing story! Very soulful. I love stories like that, that feel like someone really poured their heart into them... and I guess it's something that really is the case, not just something that seems to be so.
And yeah, maybe you are actually that fox in reality... you don't know if I am not one for sure.
Also very cozy and warm. I really loved it.

That was a delightful story. Made my whole day a little happier!
"People think dreams aren't real just because they aren't made of matter, of particles. Dreams are real. But they are made of viewpoints, of images, of memories and puns and lost hopes." - Neil Gaiman, Sandman

I’d argue it’s all semantics. Dreams are generated and sustained by matter, by the firing of neurons. However, the dream world itself is not made of matter, if it were, you wouldn’t be able to do things like fall forever or run while being locked in the same place.
Think of it this way. If I imagine a fox demon is sitting in front of me, then the fox is real because the matter in my brain is generating it. The fox is also not real because it isn’t physically there, the matter that would constitute a fox demon does not exist, only my brain matter does.
It’s an issue that scientists and philosophers have argued about for centuries: our material brains producing seemingly immaterial things.

That's a very interesting response, thanks. I can see what you mean. Hard to say what could be a frame of reference, a criterion, for what is objectively physical and what isn't. From perspective of the experiencer it's all various phenomena that are entangled with their judgement about them. I don't think that we can attribute objective realness to something, but rather an intersubjective one based on chosen criteria.
I think that it made me want to respond in the way I did to your comment. I think that it's all the same, while Neil Gaiman assumed a distinction. And about the matter and the fox; what if the matter was real, but in a dream? What if you are dreaming right now and yet all of it is this real matter? And is there a real distinction between a dream and the reality? Someone who sees someone sleeping doesn't consider what that sleeping person experiences to be as real as what that person experiences when they share the same experience of physical reality, but that person who sees someone sleeping might be sleeping themselves and it's like an endless loop of judgements about nature of reality that are limited to the same frame of reference.
Well... I think I wrote enough now... Sorry if it was too much or too much out of topic. Thanks for the thoughtful response again and I hope this one of mine makes sense too. This kinda fox demon wishes you a great day/evening, Polymorph Strand!

No problem Blaze! I'm always up for a bit of discussion and your response is interesting too. And yeah, the fact we don't have a way of determining objective reality is why some people believe we live in a simulation and why movies like Inception get so popular. But I think the distinction you mention depends on the type of dream. Some dreams are very life like indeed and might even have a story that continues night after night. But other dreams are just fleeting, unstructured nonsense. They fade rapidly from memory while the waking world stays constant. They certainly don't seem like real matter even if we can't know for sure.
Basically I'm saying that this world could be "fake", but it still feels real compared to a lot of dreams. Thus, I still think a distinction can be made between this world and dreams, even if there is room to doubt the assumption that dreams and reality are truly different.
Errr... I didn't really mean to extend the discussion but this stuff popped into my head. Do whatever you want with it and I hope your day has been good too. :)

A lovely tale. I am amazed at how beautiful the results are. Kudos to Caliconeko90, for making art with fire.
When I was young, I had a Wood Burning set, where one darkened the lines on squares of wood with inked images using the heat of a specialized pencil soldering iron. One did have to watch their paws, but once burnt, twice cautious in handling the tool . It was a good learning experience.
I love the crossover between the worlds of our dreams and the work-a-day one, including the foods.
And Yes, Miss Vixyy is right -- mouse cookies do exist, with licorice lace tails (look it up).
Being a dog, I prefer people crackers, but might give these a go.
