Daniel Fenson was once just a common thief on the streets of Advent City, opportunistic and doing what he had to to survive, and having trouble keeping a regular job due to his reckless attitude and disrespect of authority. When he was brought on by henchman of the infamous Dr. Pandemonium to break into one of the city's power plants with his excellent lockpicking and hacking skills, he came into conflict with the hero Hot Spot who tried to arrest him and get him safely out of the combat zone. The ensuing battle between the heroes of the city and the villain's forces nonetheless lead to Daniel being caught in the crossfire, exposing him to vast amounts of electricity.
Instead of killing him, it awoke in him a latent power over electro magnetic forces he had always had in him and used at low levels when robbing places with electronic locks and security. Taking up the mantle of Zap Rat after fleeing the battle and realizing what he could do, he went on a bolder and more thrilling crime spree now that he could more effectively escape or battle against the law. Dr. Pandemonium once more took notice of him and supplied him with his now infamously neon green costume, which via the power of Mad Science further enhances his powers and suits his daredevil attitude. But this would later come at a price.
When the Mad Scientist required a vast amount of power for one of his Mechano-Titans to ravage the city, he tricked Zap Rat inside and sealed him into a chamber that restrained and began to drain him of his now endless reserves of energy. It was an excruciating process, and with the chamber tailor made to hold him the rat could not escape no matter what tricks he tried with his powers. When it seemed he might be killed along with his Mechano-Titan jailor, who should come to his rescue but Hot Spot again? The fiery-hearted hero with the help of fellow city protector Brightray noticed the subtle differences in the machine, and the Dalmatian was quick to infiltrate it, located Zap Rat, and freed him.
When asked why he hadn't just been left to die and no longer be a threat to the city himself, Hot Spot merely smiled that sunny smile of his and replied, "Because you deserve to be rescued too, of course!" Zap Rat would escape again after getting medical treatment, but from then on he formed a kind of crush on Hot Spot. Sometimes going out just to mess with and be chased by him, sometimes letting himself be caught only to break free. With Frost Horn entering the picture things only get more fun, the rat enjoying making the goat get protective and jealous while subconsciously hoping to get him involved in the relationship he has with Hot Spot as well.
Powers: Zap Rat can freely generate and manipulate electricity, to the point that those in the know wonder if he is a Refrainer. This includes him being able to manipulate power cables and wires like puppet strings, and grind along power lines without breaking them. He can turn into electricity itself and travel within the power grid as well, which is his favored trick for escaping. He has jumped inside electricity powered machines like cell phones before, been able to manipulate them from within, and jump to other phones by calling them. Because of his level of control, Hot Spot and Frost Horn are the two main heroes sent to deal with him as most other defenders of the city are especially vulnerable to his manipulation of their tech.
He is capable of flight as well by repelling himself from the ground, or turning into a bolt of lightning and taking advantage of a storm. He can become nigh-invulnerable as well by turning into living electricity, drawing all energy towards him as fuel. This includes a potential storm in the sky, drawing on lightning to become outright mythical in potential and power so long as the storm is present.
Finally of note, from his more private interactions with Hot Spot he has learned he can directly manipulate the nervous system of others and the neurons in their brains. Being someone who isn't flat out evil he is extremely careful about using this on others. His favorite hero and love rival he knows are tough enough or can heal back anything he might accidentally do, and he can induce intense pleasure and even a kind of hypnosis on others. So far only by touch (which he is not complaining about in the least with those two), but also when someone is coiled up in power cables or anything that can conduct electricity, and potentially when he is zapping them from a distance.
