His future self said that there would be an assassination attempt, and that Sandy would die trying to protect Kathy because Fred wasn't there.
The assassination attempt happened. Fred choked. Sandy dove on Kathy to protect her, and neither of them got killed. The lions were killed by Jinjur instead of being aided by Jinjur. As far as Fred knows, future history has been rewritten.
