Back around '78-'79 i was putting together a comic book portfolio while going to art school, but then around '80 i switched over to putting together an illustration portfolio, but then again i ended-up in the animation biz in '82. There were a few fun pages in that old comics portfolio, so ....
Trying to come-up with a style that had some elements of Smith and of newspaper Tarzan artist Russ Manning - Manning did some nifty nearly abstract compositions in his panels. The idea is that Tarzan is feigning exhaustion to lure kind woman near so he can ask her about the other captives. Or maybe they're flirting. Or both.

marmelmm - i'm posting to you four days ago - but i'm told that you can read this reply today - i'm not sure how this technology works or if there are echoes....i think we should start by testing how to communicate over this time gap. i will type a 1. i think my late teens early twenties i was caught-up in this revival of the 1890s - 1930s book and magazine illustration - pen and ink - line work - etc - and i was reading the old pulp fiction such as Conan and Tarzan and Sherlock Holmes - discovering classical music - the good stuff from western history - media making global cultures and histories available. It was a time of getting the history of the arts into a modern perspective.
But, with that as my orientation, my goal on this page was just to make the best acronistic blend of Russ Manning, Barry Smith and Aubrey Beardsley with a strong man super hero moment.
Drama wise - a manga style cinematic close-up style would blow this away ... but the manga reaching the west was still a decade or two away.

From moving old scan files around i had left this pic with "Conan or Tarzan" in the title. Then i noticed the knife ... that could be Conan ... and the rope ...
... the rope says it's Tarzan.
