You wonder who I am
And why coyotes are good
Just look up into my eyes and see why.

I have only one problem with cyotes: They don't belong east of the Mississippi.
Other than that, I think they are a facinating canine. I mean who can't say that it's cool when you can get a pack of canines to talk to you. And pictures like this one show how pretty they are, though this is strikes me as more cute.

Except that coyotes do not hunt in organized packs, the way wolves do. Their hunting style is more like a mob.
I do understand that there are way too many deer east of the Mississippi. I'm originally from TN. As for the wolves and pumas being gone, people need to stop being afraid of what will not hurt them, reintroduce these animals, and allow the flourish once again. If there is good game, a wolf pack will ignore a cow/. As for pumas, put horses and or donkeys out with the cattle/goats and they will chase off the cats. Donkeys are also good at keeping canines away from goats.
Will all the stupidity running around, I think the best way to save any animal is to educate people about it's true nature. This can NOT be done through National Geographic, or Nature channels. Only the people who would not destroy the animals or their habitats pay attention to those. We need to have the News report about animals, and their true nature. Rather then just a report once in a while about an odd case, an animal with rabies, or when people push a poor critter much too far.
Sorry bout the rant.....

Apologize not for the rant.
We all know that edumacation is key to understanding.
National Geographic does a pretty good job with their programming but their source material comes from all over the world so they can't properly cover it all. At least they try.
Unfortunately, there are increasing reports of mountain lions actually hurting people (mostly on the west coast) and coyotes hurting people (several reports right here in suburban New Jersey) not to mention reports of people's pets being devoured. People remain afraid of these animals just like they were when we were freshly descended from the trees.
I offer no disagreement that a coyote's hunting behavior does differ quite significantly from a wolf's. It's not a perfect system but we seem to be in agreement that more predation of those animal populations that have grown too large needs to happen. I chose 'predation' rather than 'culling' because predation can include hyoomins hunting the animals for food just like a mob of coyotes or a pack of wolves or one big, honkin' mountain lion would. He would be all, like, meow, and stuff and then pounce!
Even more unfortunately are the way news is presented these days. It's been forever since dog biting man was news and slightly shorter than that since man biting dog was news. These days, if it doesn't smell like dirty laundry, the news won't report it. Crazy cat lady who is arrested for animal hoarding and cruelty for having fifty-seven cats in her one bedroom apartment makes the news. Another crazy cat lady who has fifty-seven cats and she and all of the kitties are in perfect health and are living happily together with sufficient room won't make the news.
Rather than clog up Kurst's comment page with our collective brain dribblings, I'll close here. Maybe we could start a program that teaches coyotes proper pack etiquette...
