The wolf's name actually is Karen. You would know that if you read it on the comic site, which has character tags! :p
(I actually really am proud I figured out enough HTML coding to make the tags appear on the site as links to an archive of pages that character appeared in. I do not know how to code and I was certain it would fail.)

Darby is, specifically, a plains spotted skunk (Spilogale interrupta). Spotted skunks do handstands as part of their threat display, which striped skunks do not. They usually have white-tipped tails, but morphs with solid black exist, and as soon as I learned this fact I envisioned Darby as one of these. Coincidentally, it's also easier to draw.
